The Mayo Clinic has initiated a $5 billion expansion plan that includes new buildings, designed to meet changing needs of patients.

The clinic seeks to create neighbourhoods within the new facilities, where patients can go for all the services they need for their particular condition, such as cancer, without needing to be shuttled between various departments.
Another component of that strategy will be integrating in-person and virtual visits, and taking advantage of artificial intelligence, including to accelerate the development of new cures.
The project is part of a Mayo strategy to transform both patient care and its campus. The idea is to blur the traditional lines between inpatient and outpatient care and between digital and in-person care.
Dr Farrugia, CEO, Mayo Clinic Florida, called it Mayo's biggest and most ambitious investment in a 160-year history of innovation. He said their vision is for more than just creating better spaces for patients and staff.
“We know that for overall health care transformation, indeed even for digital innovation to thrive in health care, we also need new types of health care buildings. Across the country, we’re providing 21st-century care in 20th-century buildings. It is simply, by far, not good enough,’’ he added.
Founded in 1864, the Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit American academic medical centre. It is focused on integrated health care, education, and research. Its mission is to improve patient care by fundamentally changing the nature of healthcare delivery. This clinic is known for its patient care and scientific breakthroughs in cancer and gene therapies.
In September this year, Mayo Clinic partnered with GE HealthCare to drive advancements in medical imaging and technology. The joint initiative, titled the 'Strategic Collaboration for Innovation in Medical Imaging and Theranostics,' brought together a diverse team of scientists, technology developers, clinicians, and healthcare providers from Mayo Clinic and GE HealthCare.
Earlier, the Mayo Clinic ventured into value-based and data-driven healthcare. These new data analytic networks aim to help health systems leverage the power of data analytics and AI. With this initiative the company sought to promote proactive and predictive medicine, ultimately improving patient outcomes. This came at a time when Mayo Clinic is pushing for value-based care which hinges on using data and information to extrapolate predictive information for the benefit of the patient.
