They aim to enhance the patient experience by applying new technologies and approaches to medical imaging and theranostics in real-world clinical settings.

Mayo Clinic and GE HealthCare have collaborated in healthcare research and product development. This partnership aims to enhance the experience of patients and clinicians in the practice of radiology and the delivery of innovative therapies.

The joint initiative, titled the '˜Strategic Collaboration for Innovation in Medical Imaging and Theranostics,' brings together a diverse team of scientists, technology developers, clinicians, and healthcare providers from Mayo Clinic and GE HealthCare.

Their collective goal is to provide clinicians with cutting-edge technology for precise diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Moreover, they seek to personalise the patient experience throughout their care journey by translating novel technologies and approaches to medical imaging and theranostics into clinical practice.

Dr Matthew Callstrom, Chair of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, emphasised the critical role of technology in healthcare. He said, "We are at a critical time in healthcare '“ technology is rapidly evolving, and we have a responsibility to drive healthcare capabilities through clinical translation and adoption of advanced technologies. This collaboration brings our research and clinical teams' expertise and feedback closer to product development and commercialisation of innovation, ultimately accelerating the rate of translation of our research to patient care and offering greater opportunity for global impact."

The alliance builds upon a history of research collaborations between Mayo Clinic and GE HealthCare. The present collaboration focuses on four core areas:

Advancing Magnetic Resonance (MR) Technologies

It aims to develop and clinically translate advanced MR technologies and techniques rapidly. These advancements will transform patient care by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into exams, from the initial order to the final report.

Precision in Cancer Care

By enabling precise imaging and dosimetry of highly targeted theranostic agents, the collaboration seeks to transform cancer care. This includes enhancing radioisotope production for broader patient access.

Enhancing Ultrasound

The partnership aims to simplify and expedite diagnostic and interventional ultrasound use and interpretation. Automation and quantification will improve patient access, ensure consistency of care, and enhance the clinician's experience.

Personalised Imaging Experience

Further, the collaboration seeks to improve the patient imaging experience across the entire care continuum by leveraging multi-modal data, AI, and digital health platforms. This will streamline clinical operations and support more personalised diagnosis and therapy.

President and CEO of Imaging at GE HealthCare, Jan Makela, said, "Mayo Clinic is globally acknowledged to be among the best in healthcare and care innovation. By collaborating with their scientists, inventors, and healthcare providers, we will accelerate innovation and increase the clinical impact of our technologies beyond what either of our organisations could achieve independently."

This multi-faceted collaboration bridges clinical research, product development, application of new clinical uses and techniques, and enhanced patient access.

It fosters close alignment between research teams and medical departments dependent on radiological data, spanning multiple radiological disciplines such as cardiology, oncology, radiation oncology, vascular, neurology, nuclear medicine, and urology.

Collaboration activities and research will be conducted at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit organisation, works in the areas of innovation in clinical practice, education, and research. On the other hand, GE HealthCare is a global leader in medical technology, pharmaceutical diagnostics, and digital solutions.

In June of this year, Mayo Clinic collaborated with Google Cloud, leveraging Google's cutting-edge technology suite and advancements in generative AI to enhance healthcare. Through this partnership, the Mayo System grants its clinicians and researchers access to Google's Enterprise Search capabilities, ensuring HIPAA compliance and aiming to boost their productivity and effectiveness.
