ZEISS India has announced a strategic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to drive cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence (AI) for eye care.
As part of this initiative, ZEISS has established a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to developing high-fidelity AI solutions aimed at improving vision care and training students in AI technologies.
The initiative is supported by the Spectrum Lab within the Department of Electrical Engineering at IISc. It seeks to leverage AI's potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline clinical workflows, and improve patient outcomes.
Given the increasing prevalence of vision impairments globally, this partnership aims to develop AI-driven solutions that can transform early detection and treatment methods in ophthalmology.
The research facility will serve as a hub for innovation, enabling IISc researchers to explore how AI can be integrated into ophthalmic diagnostics.
The collaboration between ZEISS India and IISc is expected to contribute to advancements in eye care solutions, both in India and globally.
Ashish Modi, Head of the Centre for Application Research India (CARIn), ZEISS India, said, "Our collaboration with IISc is a step towards bridging this gap, empowering Indian researchers with advanced resources and real-world applications. By fostering a sustainable research ecosystem, we aim to drive global breakthroughs in eye-care technology while strengthening India's position as a hub for scientific excellence."
Dr Rajesh Sundaresan, Dean of the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Sciences Division at IISc, emphasized the importance of long-term academia-industry partnerships.
He stated, "Such collaborations provide young researchers with resources and exposure to address real-world challenges. India needs more such initiatives to remain at the forefront of technological progress."
In addition to setting up the research lab, ZEISS India has launched a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-sponsored MTech Fellowship Program at IISc.
Over the next three years, the company will sponsor six MTech students specializing in Signal Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science & Engineering, and Computational and Data Science.
