The project is being developed under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) to improve healthcare access in minority-concentrated areas.

The Government District Hospital in Vadakara is set for a major infrastructure upgrade. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will lay the foundation stone for a new six-story hospital block on April 12.

The project is being developed under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), a joint initiative by the Union and State governments to improve healthcare access in minority-concentrated areas.

The new facility will span 14,329 square meters and include infrastructure for advanced surgical, emergency, and outpatient care. According to the official release, the building will house six operation theatres, male and female inpatient wards with 123 beds each, isolation wards, a 22-bed surgical intensive care unit (ICU), a 14-bed post-operative ward, and a 25-bed emergency ward.

The foundation ceremony will be attended by the Minister of State for Fisheries, Dairying, Animal Husbandry, and Minority Affairs, George Kurian; the Minister for Minority Welfare, V. Abdurahiman; the Minister for Health, Women, and Child Development, Veena George; the Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas, and the Minister for Forest and Wildlife A.K. Saseendran.

Designed to support high patient and staff movement, the building will feature parking for over 290 vehicles, including basement and surface spaces. Additional facilities will include a dedicated waiting room, a pharmacy with storage provisions, and 24 outpatient consultation rooms.

The hospital will also include centralized laboratory and radiology services, along with a blood bank unit, to strengthen diagnostic and transfusion services for critical care.

The PMJVK scheme focuses on infrastructure development to improve public service access in minority-concentrated regions. Though no timeline for completion was provided, the expansion marks a significant step in strengthening secondary healthcare services at the district level.

Once operational, the upgraded facility is expected to enhance the population's access to surgical, emergency, and diagnostic services in and around Vadakara.

In a related move, Kerala Health Minister Veena George recently announced the rollout of digital payment systems in government hospitals across the state. The system aims to simplify the fee payment process for patients accessing various medical services. The Health Department plans to expand this facility to the remaining government hospitals within the next month.
