US-based Sutter Health, an integrated health delivery system, has revealed plans to construct an innovation centre in San Francisco, focusing on developing innovative healthcare technologies and services.

This centre is envisioned to serve as a nucleus for Sutter's in-house innovation team and foster collaboration with physicians, co-workers, students, and external technology partners.

Commenting on the same, Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health, said, "We are embarking on a journey to transform healthcare, seeking improvements in managing chronic diseases and providing home-based care. We aim for the impact of our work to ripple through the healthcare ecosystem, benefitting clinicians and patients alike."

Situated in the proximity of Northern California's tech and venture capital networks, the innovation centre is slated to engage in investments and partnerships with venture firms and early-stage digital health startups.

The company is actively seeking collaborations at every stage of development, ranging from initial concept to full-fledged implementation. This initiative aims to provide a platform for partners to test, validate, and roll out their healthcare projects in real-world medical settings.

Among its extensive patient base of almost 3 million individuals, Sutter sees this huge network as a microcosm ripe with potential collaboration opportunities.

Talking about the same, Chris Waugh, VP and chief innovation officer of Sutter Health, said, "We're pushing the boundaries of innovation, prioritising a human-centric approach to ignite transformation that enhances both patient and provider experiences."

The centre's location within San Francisco is yet to be finalised, with operations expected to commence by early 2024.

Additionally, the innovation center plans to expand its collaborations, including a partnership with Ferrum Health, an AI-powered platform that aids radiologists in interpreting medical images.

Founded in 1921 in California, Sutter Health consists of 23 acute care hospitals, five medical foundations, and specialised surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, rehab, and home care centres.

As a result of its proven track record in transforming healthcare innovations and partnering with leading organizations, the company is expected to build on its prior initiatives, such as the Innovation Hatchery incubator and Scout by Sutter Health, a mental health management application for young people.

As one of California's largest healthcare systems, Sutter Health's total operating revenues was at $15 billion in 2022.
