The technology will be integrated into the daily operations of approximately 4,700 physicians at Ochsner’s 46 hospitals and 370 health and urgent care centers.

Ochsner Health, a major non-profit healthcare provider in the Gulf South, has entered into a new agreement with DeepScribe to implement ambient AI voice technology across its network.

The technology will be integrated into the daily operations of approximately 4,700 physicians at Ochsner’s 46 hospitals and 370 health and urgent care centers.

This decision follows a successful pilot program earlier this year, which reportedly demonstrated positive results in patient satisfaction and physician adoption.

Additionally, Ochsner Health plans to extend the use of DeepScribe’s technology across its system over the next year. Initial expansion will focus on primary care and orthopedic services, with broader implementation expected as the technology proves its value across different service lines.

DeepScribe’s technology, known for its ambient AI capabilities, aims to streamline the documentation process by producing accurate clinical notes and offering real-time insights during patient interactions.

Pilot Results & Technology Deployment

The pilot, which involved 50 physicians from various specialties, claimed significant improvements. DeepScribe’s HealAI technology reduced documentation time by around 75%, turning hours of note-taking into just minutes. This improvement was evident across multiple specialties, including primary care, oncology, and nephrology.

Dr Jason Hill, innovation officer, Ochsner Health, said, “We did a side-by-side pilot with DeepScribe and one other solution and decided ultimately to settle on DeepScribe. We felt DeepScribe was just a great partner. They are willing to dive in with us to address the problems that our organization faces and provide quick solutions to them.”

He also emphasized that DeepScribe’s flexibility and integration capabilities were crucial in overcoming initial adoption hurdles.

Established in 2017, DeepScribe’s HealAI platform, built on extensive patient conversation data, supports a range of medical specialties and custom workflows. The company’s ability to tailor its technology to specific needs was a key factor in Ochsner Health's selection.

Feedback from the pilot indicated increased satisfaction among both patients and physicians.

Dr Terrance Wickman, a nephrologist at Ochsner Health, shared, “Before using DeepScribe, I spent at least two to three hours a day preparing for visits and then going back and editing notes based on patient conversations. Now, I have streamlined that into three to four minutes per note. So documentation takes me about a quarter of the time.”

The technology not only improved note-taking efficiency but also contributed to higher patient satisfaction scores. The pilot showed an increase in patient satisfaction from 89% to approximately 96% among DeepScribe users.

Highlighting the impact of technology on patient engagement, Matthew Ko, COO and cofounder of DeepScribe, said, “We were able to improve the patient satisfaction from 89% to around 96% during the pilot comparing the users who didn’t use DeepScribe to those who did.”

He attributed this to the technology’s ability to enhance the doctor-patient interaction by reducing the time spent on documentation.

Dr Hill noted the importance of evaluating various aspects of the deployment. “We’re looking beyond 2025 to evaluate other service lines and so small pilots in other service lines to see where those value equations lie,” he said.

He emphasized that the technology must offer tangible benefits, including standardization of documentation, increased efficiency, and enhanced physician satisfaction.
