CM Saha noted that over the last six years, healthcare modernization has brought Tripura to par with other states, with surgeons now capable of performing advanced medical procedures locally.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that the state government is fully committed to transforming Tripura into a self-sufficient medical hub, focusing on bolstering healthcare services and infrastructure.
Addressing a recent event, Saha emphasized the importance of healthcare, calling it a primary asset for the state.
The government is actively working to improve medical facilities, aiming to build high-quality hospitals and healthcare infrastructure to meet local healthcare needs.
The CM said that following PM Narendra Modi's guidance, efforts are underway to recruit more medical professionals, including specialists and super-specialists, to advance healthcare services in Tripura.
CM Saha noted that over the last six years, healthcare modernization has brought Tripura to par with other states, with surgeons now capable of performing advanced medical procedures locally.
These developments have significantly reduced the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialized treatments. According to Saha, eight organizations have shown interest in establishing high-standard hospitals in Agartala.
The state government is facilitating this by allocating prime city land for these new institutions, though they will need to recruit their medical personnel, as government doctors will not be permitted to serve in these private facilities.
In line with the government’s vision for a comprehensive medical hub, Tripura’s healthcare offerings will extend beyond allopathic medicine to include homeopathic and ayurvedic care.
The state is also prioritizing medical education by expanding medical colleges, currently offering around 400 MBBS seats.
Additionally, Tripura now has a government dental college with 63 seats, while new facilities, such as a dialysis unit and a female medicine ward, have recently been inaugurated.
Medical colleges in the state have high-quality faculty, and students have demonstrated excellent academic performance.
Kidney transplants are already available within Tripura, and there are plans to introduce liver transplant services in the future, CM Saha said.
The Seha Hospital in Manipur has proposed investing approximately INR 700 Cr to set up a hospital and medical college in Tripura, pending cabinet approval.
Additional healthcare centers are being developed in Udaipur, Ambassa, and North Tripura, with a cardiac care center inaugurated recently in Ambassa.
To tackle substance abuse, de-addiction centers with a budget allocation of INR 20 Cr each are being established in every district.
In a move to increase medical postgraduate opportunities, the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) offers 85 PG seats across 20 departments.
Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, another major healthcare institution, has increased its bed count from 727 to 1,413.
The Chief Minister also shared that INR 515 Cr has been allocated from the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) to support various health initiatives and projects in Tripura.
Saha expressed confidence that this funding, combined with the ongoing initiatives, will drive significant advancements in healthcare services across the state, helping to make Tripura a prominent healthcare hub in Northeast India.
