In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the state, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced an allocation of INR 100 crore for constructing a new eye hospital equipped with modern medical facilities.
The declaration was made during the World Health Day event organized by the Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura in Agartala.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the health portfolio, said, “We are opening a dedicated Maternal and Child Clinic, and work is already in progress. Over ₹150 crore has been received from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) for this project. Infrastructure development is underway, and the healthcare workforce will be expanded.”
The eye hospital, which is included in the current state budget, is part of the government’s larger strategy to address gaps in specialized care. Saha confirmed that new Primary Health Centers (PHCs) are also being set up in different parts of the state.
Emphasizing the importance of disease prevention over treatment, the Chief Minister said, “Prevention is better than cure. We can avoid many diseases if we remain alert and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Physical fitness is key to a disease-free life.”
He also highlighted the impact of awareness campaigns, stating that the objective of such efforts should not merely be symbolic but should instill absolute health consciousness. “While many conduct rallies, the real purpose should be to promote health consciousness among the masses,” he said.
Saha acknowledged the increasing interest from private hospitals and investors, crediting the prevailing peace in the state for the sector’s growth. He reiterated the government’s focus on improving access to health services for all citizens.
Raising concern over the rise in drug addiction, especially the use of injectable drugs leading to higher HIV/AIDS cases, the Chief Minister urged a collective effort. “Drug abuse is a major issue. We must eradicate it from Tripura. Everyone needs to come forward and contribute. The government is with the people. We are performing well on all parameters,” he stated.
He also called for lifestyle changes and highlighted the link between unhealthy habits and premature deaths. “We often advise others to live healthily but fail to follow it ourselves. This has to change,” he said.
Saha further addressed the issue of child marriage, calling it a damaging practice. “Our government is working on multiple fronts to ensure the well-being of every citizen,” he concluded.
