The initiative, part of a broader strategy to bolster healthcare infrastructure across the state, is expected to significantly improve emergency response and patient outcomes.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced the establishment of 50-bedded Critical Care Blocks (CCBs) in government hospitals in Perambalur, Vaniyambadi, and Anaicut, with a combined investment of INR 71.25 Cr.
According to an official release on Monday, each CCB will be set up at an individual cost of INR 23.75 Cr. The goal is to enhance emergency care and intensive treatment capabilities in these regions.
The initiative, part of a broader strategy to bolster healthcare infrastructure across the state, is expected to significantly improve emergency response and patient outcomes.
The CCBs will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including ICU beds, ventilators, advanced surgical theatres, and high-capacity oxygen systems to provide comprehensive care for critically ill patients.
The government expects that these facilities will reduce dependency on tertiary centers, cut down transfer times, and potentially lower mortality rates.
In addition, new District Integrated Public Health Laboratories (DIPHLs) will be set up at government hospitals in Ulundurpettai, Cumbum, Perambalur, Vedaranyam, and Karaikudi.
These labs, with a unit cost of INR 1.25 Cr each, totaling INR 6.25 Cr, will improve diagnostic services in these regions.
Currently, hospitals in Vaniyambadi, Perambalur, and Anaicut serve approximately 2,511, 1,632, and 1,057 outpatients daily, respectively.
As per the official release, this infrastructure boost is set to provide substantial relief and support for the health needs of local populations.
In another development, the Tamil Nadu Health Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) in January this year to eliminate tuberculosis by 2030.
The MoU aims to procure and supply tuberculosis diagnostic equipment under IOCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This effort aligns with the government’s mission to reduce TB mortality, as demonstrated by projects like Tamil Nadu’s Kasanoi Erappila Thittam (TN-KET), meaning "TB death-free project," which has significantly reduced early TB fatalities.
