Over the last two decades, the integration of AI-powered robotics into healthcare has revolutionized the industry, from enhancing surgical precision to reshaping patient rehabilitation. Beginning in 2002 with India’s first robot-assisted surgery at Delhi’s Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, robotics in healthcare has matured into an indispensable tool, fostering innovation and elevating standards of care.

The Rise of Robotic Surgery in India

The introduction of robot-assisted surgery marked a paradigm shift in healthcare. Robotic systems, such as Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci, have set a new benchmark in minimally invasive surgeries. These systems empower surgeons with enhanced precision, translating into reduced trauma, shorter recovery periods, and improved surgical outcomes. Applications span disciplines such as urology, gynecology, general surgery, and cardiology.

The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for adopting robotic technology in Indian healthcare. Intuitive Surgical, a global leader in robotic systems, witnessed a surge in demand post-pandemic. Mandeep Singh Kumar, Vice President and Country General Manager of Intuitive India noted the rapid adoption of robotics across metropolitan and smaller cities. Hospitals, including Apollo, Fortis, Max, and Manipal, alongside government institutions like AIIMS and JIPMER, have been pivotal in this expansion.

Democratizing Robotic Surgery

Efforts to make robotic surgery accessible and affordable have gained traction. Last year, Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital in Ghaziabad and the CK Birla Group implemented advanced robotic systems, aiming to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and affordability. Initiatives like these have made robotic surgery a viable option for a broader demographic, offering patients faster recoveries and hospitals greater operational efficiency.

Further, innovations such as the G Gaiter robot, developed by Genrobotics in Kerala, demonstrate the potential of robotics in rehabilitation. Designed to aid patients with mobility challenges stemming from strokes or spinal injuries, this AI-powered device accelerates recovery and boosts patient morale during therapy.

Expanding Horizons with AI & Robotics

Robotic systems like the da Vinci platform continue to evolve, integrating advanced AI for better control and visualization. These systems enhance the surgeon's capabilities, enabling minimally invasive procedures with unmatched precision. In orthopedics, robotic systems such as Mako have revolutionized joint replacement surgeries, ensuring precision and reducing recovery times.

Dr Mahendra Bhandari, CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation, emphasizes the transformative impact of robotic surgery in India. The foundation has played a crucial role in training surgeons and promoting robotic surgery. According to Dr Bhandari, the number of robotic systems in India has grown significantly, supported by a rising pool of trained surgeons and institutional investments.

Pioneering Technological Developments

The launch of indigenous robotic systems has further democratized access to this technology. Meril’s MISSO, designed for knee replacement surgeries, represents a significant milestone. With a compact footprint and cost-effective model, MISSO addresses affordability concerns and expands accessibility to Tier-II and Tier-III cities. By reducing pre-operative planning time and enhancing surgical outcomes, MISSO exemplifies the potential of Indian innovation in healthcare.

Meanwhile, Kolkata’s Peerless Hospital has introduced humanoid robotics powered by AI and augmented reality. This technology, incorporating Microsoft’s HoloLens, allows surgeons to visualize and plan surgeries in three dimensions. By enhancing precision and reducing variability, such innovations promise better patient outcomes and long-term functionality.

The Future of Humanoid Robotics

India is poised to enter a new era of healthcare robotics with initiatives such as Addverb Robotics’ AI-powered humanoid. Scheduled for launch in 2025, these humanoids will support patient care and streamline complex workflows. Equipped with Jio-powered AI and 5G connectivity, these robots are designed to perform intricate tasks such as patient assistance and environmental management. With capabilities like real-time decision-making, Addverb’s humanoids promise to revolutionize healthcare delivery.

Challenges & the Path Forward

Despite its transformative potential, robotic surgery faces challenges related to cost and accessibility. Imported robotic systems are expensive, and the training requirements for surgeons and staff remain a hurdle. However, the emergence of indigenous systems like MISSO and support from state governments, such as Telangana’s robotic policy initiative, are steps in the right direction.

Health insurers have also begun recognizing the value of robotic surgery. The reduced risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recoveries make robotic procedures financially viable for both patients and providers. This shift in policy further enhances accessibility, encouraging widespread adoption.

Conclusion

AI-powered robotics is reshaping healthcare in India, offering unparalleled precision and efficiency. From pioneering surgeries to innovative rehabilitation systems, robotics is transforming patient care. The growing acceptance of this technology, coupled with innovations from both global and Indian players, signals a bright future. As India continues to leverage its expertise and scale, AI-powered robotics is set to become a cornerstone of healthcare innovation, bridging the gap between technology and patient care.
