Expanding its Orthopaedic Solutions Portfolio, Smith+Nephew Introduces Innovative AETOS Shoulder System for Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

England-based Smith+Nephew, a global medtech company, has unveiled the AETOS Shoulder System in the United States.

This announcement comes alongside receiving 510(k) clearance for the system's utilization with ATLASPLAN 3D Planning Software and patient-specific instrumentation, targeting total shoulder arthroplasty.

The AETOS Shoulder System has been developed in response to the surging demand for effective solutions in the rapidly growing field of total shoulder arthroplasty.

With an estimated 250,000 procedures anticipated in the US by 2025, there is a pressing need for innovations to address the challenges associated with arthritic shoulder pain and restore patients' range of motion.

The AETOS Shoulder System is specifically designed to meet these demands, offering advanced features aimed at enhancing surgical outcomes and improving patients' quality of life.

Decoding AETOS Shoulder System

The AETOS Shoulder System is designed to restore patients' range of motion and alleviate arthritic shoulder pain effectively. At the heart of this system lies the Meta Stem, renowned for its stability through metaphyseal fixation and an inlay collar.

This design ensures bone preservation along with maintaining the patient's anatomy, a crucial factor in achieving successful outcomes in shoulder replacement surgeries.

Sharing thoughts, Dr Charles Jobin, an orthopedic surgeon, Irving Medical Center, Columbia University, said."After using the system for the past several months, I can say that the AETOS Shoulder System is a game changer."

Further, Dr Jobin emphasized the system's stability and flexibility, coupled with streamlined instrumentation, significantly benefits patients and surgeons alike.

How does AETOS Shoulder System Work

AETOS Shoulder System extends to its suitability for both anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty procedures. Its comprehensive portfolio offers surgeons the flexibility they need during surgeries, resulting in a more streamlined and efficient operating room flow.

With fewer conversion steps and a reduced requirement for instruments, the system simplifies the surgical process, particularly in environments like Ambulatory Service Centers (ASCs), where optimization of resources is paramount.

Adding insights on the system's stem fixation and instrumentation, Dr Matthew Ramsey, a shoulder and elbow specialist at Rothman Orthopaedics, said, "I'm thrilled with the stem fixation of the implant that the AETOS Shoulder System provides and believe it will be a noticeable, positive improvement for my patients."

Dr Ramsey also noted the system's instrumentation, particularly highlighting the low-profile and user-friendly nature of the glenoid reamer.

Advanced Planning Software for Precision Surgery

The integration of ATLASPLAN 3D Planning Software and patient-specific instrumentation enhances the AETOS Shoulder System's capabilities. This software enables preoperative planning for total shoulder arthroplasty using Materialise NV's personalized solutions.

Additionally, its user-friendly interface allows surgeons to access the planner from any computer or tablet, ensuring convenience and accessibility.

Moreover, the fast turnaround time from image upload to planning enables efficient surgical planning, minimizing delays and optimizing patient outcomes. Additionally, the option for a 3D-printed glenoid guide, equipped with a patented coracoid clip for stability, enhances the accuracy and reliability of executing the surgical plan through conventional techniques.

Recent Innovation in Orthopaedic Solutions

The release of the AETOS Shoulder System by Smith+Nephew demonstrates their aim to enhance orthopedic solutions. This new addition to their Upper Extremity portfolio expands their range of options for patients and healthcare professionals, strengthening their position in the orthopedic field.

Smith+Nephew's dedication to innovation extends beyond shoulder surgeries, as evidenced by their previous launches of groundbreaking solutions such as the OR3O Dual Mobility System for hip arthroplasty and the REGENETEN Bioinductive Implant for rotator cuffs.

Established in 1856, Smith & Nephew plc, operating under the name Smith+Nephew, is a British multinational medical equipment manufacturing firm headquartered in Watford, England.

The company boasts a global presence as a leading manufacturer of advanced wound management solutions, arthroscopy equipment, trauma and clinical therapy offerings, and orthopedic reconstruction products.

With a broad reach, its diverse portfolio finds distribution in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Previously, in 2023, Smith+Nephew introduced its REGENETEN Bioinductive Implant in India. With more than 100,000 procedures performed globally since its inception, the REGENETEN implant improved the approach to surgical procedures for rotator cuffs.
