Samsung Medison has recently completed the acquisition of Sonio SAS, a French AI startup specializing in obstetrics ultrasound reporting software.

The announcement comes after Samsung received clearance from the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance to acquire 100% shares of Sonio SAS.

Founded in 2020 by Cécile Brosset and Deepak Prakash, Sonio aims to enhance women's and children's health globally through its advanced IT solutions and AI-powered assistant features for obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound.

This strategic move aims to enhance Samsung Medison’s capabilities in maternal care and ultrasound technology by integrating Sonio’s AI-driven solutions with Samsung’s engineering expertise.

According to Yong Kwan Kim, CEO of Samsung Medison, the collaboration will combine best-in-class ultrasound AI technology and advanced reporting capabilities.

Reportedly, the acquisition will combine Sonio’s AI diagnostic assistance functions with Samsung’s ultrasound equipment to improve workflows and enhance exam quality and efficiency.

Further, Sonio’s technology supports medical professionals in evaluating and documenting ultrasound exams, improving overall accuracy and efficiency.

Sharing thoughts on the development, Deepak Prakash, CTO of Sonio SAS, said, "Together, Samsung and Sonio aim to bring about a transformational shift in prenatal ultrasound examinations, which could be a game-changer in developing regions, including India."

One of its flagship products, Sonio Detect, is an FDA 510(k) cleared AI assistant that provides precise feedback on the quality of ultrasound examinations.

Reportedly, Sonio Detect has demonstrated over 90% sensitivity in recognizing fetal ultrasound views.

Cécile Brosset, CEO and Co-founder of Sonio, said, "As an independent company, Sonio will continue to advance medical reporting technology and diagnostic software globally, focusing particularly on underserved healthcare areas, while maintaining a close collaboration with Samsung Medison."

This partnership aims to accelerate global growth in maternal care, particularly in underserved areas, by leveraging AI-powered ultrasound technology.

Samsung Medison was founded in 1985. It was later acquired by Samsung Electronics in 2010.
