The dual initiative aims to enhance clinical outcomes and holistic support for cancer patients across Maharashtra.
Sahyadri Hospitals has launched a cancer support group, Beaming Hope, and introduced the Varian TrueBeam radiotherapy system at its Deccan Gymkhana facility.
The dual initiative aims to enhance clinical outcomes and holistic support for cancer patients across Maharashtra.
The Beaming Hope initiative provides emotional, psychological, and practical support to patients, survivors, and caregivers. It offers a platform for shared experiences, mental health support, and ongoing clinical care.
“Cancer care is no longer limited to treatment and survival. Quality of life is now an essential focus,” said Dr Sunil Rao, Chief Operating Officer and Medical Director at Sahyadri Group of Hospitals. “This initiative ensures patients receive emotional and social support at every stage.”
Dr Vinod Gore, Surgical Oncologist at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, noted that emotional well-being is critical to recovery. “The support group offers a space for patients and caregivers to connect, share, and find strength in the community.”
Alongside the support group, Sahyadri Hospital has deployed the Varian TrueBeam radiotherapy system, which enables high-precision treatment, particularly for tumors affected by respiratory motion, such as those in the lungs and abdomen.
“This is a major step forward in radiation oncology,” said Dr. Tushar Patil, Medical Oncologist. “TrueBeam allows us to deliver treatment more accurately while reducing session times and patient discomfort.”
According to Dr Jagadish Shejul, a Radiation Oncologist, over 25 patients have already been treated using the system. He cited a recent case involving a 75-year-old retired military officer with a benign brain tumor near the motor control center. The tumor was treated non-invasively using surface-guided imaging and HyperArc radiotherapy, avoiding complications such as paralysis.
“Precision is critical when operating near vital areas,” said Dr Shejul. “This technology enables sub-millimeter accuracy, protecting healthy tissue and improving outcomes.”
With these developments, Sahyadri Hospitals has combined oncology care with advanced technology and patient-centric support services.
The launch comes amid a steady rise in cancer cases in India. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the country recorded a 36% increase in cancer incidence between 2012 and 2022, with cases rising from 1.01 million to 1.38 million. During the same period, cancer-related deaths surged by 30.3%. India currently ranks third globally in total cancer cases and second in cancer-related deaths.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda has recently inaugurated a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Radio Nucleotide Therapy Ward, and Free Generic Dispensary at the National Cancer Institute, AIIMS-2, Badhsa. Speaking at a two-day national seminar on cancer at the institute, Nadda emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure.
