Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, one of Karnataka’s prominent healthcare providers, has launched the Ramaiah Stroke Centre, a comprehensive and advanced stroke management unit aimed at reducing mortality and disability caused by stroke incidents.
The newly established facility, designed as a 24/7 specialized center, is supported by a dedicated Neurointensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) and a 6-bed Stroke ICU that promises intensive, round-the-clock care.
The center’s primary objective is to ensure that patients suspected of having a stroke receive rapid diagnosis and intervention within the crucial treatment window.
"When it comes to stroke management, the Stroke Code protocol is initiated within the Golden Window Period of 4.5 hours when a patient is suspected of having a stroke," explained Dr Aruna D Ramesh, Head of Department and Senior Consultant at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital’s Accident & Emergency Department.
The "Stroke Code" protocol, which the hospital strictly follows, involves eight critical steps, known as the "8 Ds" of stroke care: Detection, Dispatch, Delivery, Door, Diagnosis, Decision, Drug, and Disposition.
This sequence guides rapid assessment and treatment, from recognizing early symptoms to delivering prompt care at the hospital.
Dr Ramesh emphasized that by adhering to these steps, “the stroke team is alert and prepared to address the patient's needs swiftly, enhancing the chances of a positive outcome.”
An integral part of the Ramaiah Stroke Centre is its dedicated Neuro Rehabilitation Unit. This facility is geared towards providing comprehensive rehabilitation for stroke patients, supporting their recovery through specialized therapy.
The unit's rehabilitation programs are designed to help patients regain their physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities post-stroke, thereby improving their quality of life and aiding in secondary prevention.
The hospital's stroke center also includes a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians, and rehabilitation specialists who collaborate to administer both medical and surgical interventions as needed.
This team approach aims to prevent complications, facilitate recovery, and reduce the likelihood of recurrent strokes.
