The hospital, expected to be completed by 2027, will be built on land near the National Defence Academy and within a key air funnel zone used by aircraft.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), allowing it to construct its proposed multispecialty hospital in Warje.

The hospital, expected to be completed by 2027, will be built on land near the National Defence Academy and within a key air funnel zone used by aircraft.

The hospital is slated to be developed with an estimated investment of ₹380 crores. Spanning 2.5 acres, the facility will offer services under PMC and government-run health schemes. It will feature a 100-bed ICU, 12 operating theatres, and multiple specialty departments. Additional amenities include a 60,000 sq. ft. healing garden, a dedicated mental health department, and yoga, physiotherapy, and wellness centers, providing a comprehensive approach to healthcare and recovery.

An air funnel zone is the airspace used by approaching or departing aircraft near airports.

The hospital will focus on cancer, obstetrics, and gynaecology (OB-GYN) research and treatment and will also be India's first healthcare hub to be built on the Export Credit Model. The entire investment in the project is from a foreign fund led by a Netherlands-based quasi-government organization.

According to the contract between the civic body and the organization, 10-20% of the hospital's beds will be allocated to underprivileged patients. Additionally, PMC will receive an annual income from the hospital. The patients admitted to the facility will have access to all healthcare schemes introduced by the state government.

PMC Gets Much-Awaited Nod by Defence Ministry

In a press release, the PMC health department stated, “As the Warje hospital site was located in the funnel zone of NDA and Lohegaon Airport, the PMC needed to get the necessary permission from the airport.”

“Though the Pune district guardian minister Ajit Pawar did the groundbreaking of this hospital, work had not started due to pending NOC for construction. Municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale and the State government helped us to get permission in the funnel zone. The whole process took almost a year,” the release further stated.

Dr Nina Borade, PMC's chief health officer, said, "After a year of follow-ups, the defence ministry finally gave the project the green light. The hospital's construction will start soon. The plan has been sent to MoD."

In January, Jupiter Life Line Hospitals (Jupiter Hospital) announced plans to establish a 300-bed greenfield hospital in Thane’s Ghodbunder-Mira Road area. The project will involve an investment of INR 400 crore and is expected to be completed over the next four years. The new hospital aims to cater to the healthcare requirements of communities in Dahisar, Mira Bhayandar, and the Vasai Virar Municipal regions, which currently lack adequate medical facilities.
