The Medical Genetics Department will work closely with oncology, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, IVF and fetal medicine, and pediatrics departments.

In a significant development for the city's healthcare landscape, KEM Hospital Pune has inaugurated a multidisciplinary Medical Genetics Department.

This specialized unit offers comprehensive genetic testing services and genetic counseling under one roof.

The department houses dedicated clinics for reproductive genetics, cancer genetics, neurogenetics, and nephrogenetics.

Reportedly, the Medical Genetics Department will work closely with various departments across the hospital, including oncology, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, IVF and fetal medicine, and pediatrics.

This collaboration ensures patients receive comprehensive care, with their primary physician and the genetics team guiding them through genetic testing, counseling, and personalized management plans.

Headed by Dr Meenal Agarwal, Dr Chaitanya Datar, and Dr Manisha Doiphode, the department boasts a team of expert geneticists.

Dr Agarwal emphasized the importance of pre and post-test counseling, a critical feature of the department's services.

“Genetic tests are not simply ‘Yes or No’ answers,” explained Dr Agarwal.

“There are complexities involved, which is why pre and post-testing counseling is crucial,” she said.

Services Offered by the Medical Genetics Department

This clinic provides preconception genetic testing for couples planning a pregnancy, genetic tests for pregnant women, and couples with a family history of developmental delays or autism.

Moreover, the department offers genetic testing, treatment plans, specific protocols, and guidance for future pregnancies.

Further, Genetic testing is available for individuals with a family history of cancer to determine their risk level and enable preventive measures.

Additionally, those diagnosed with cancer can undergo genetic testing of the cancerous tissue, allowing for targeted therapies and the best course of treatment.

According to the hospital, people with seizure disorders or metabolic conditions can benefit from genetic testing that helps identify specific drug therapies or treatments targeted toward their particular genetic makeup.

Talking about the development, Dr Madhur Rao, senior deputy medical administrator at KEM Pune, said, “This is a major milestone not only for our hospital but also for Pune’s healthcare sector.”

The hospital envisions expanding its multidisciplinary services to other departments in the future as medical science advances.

“The specialized Medical Genetics Department underscores our unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare that is accessible and affordable for all,” remarked Shirin Wadia, general administrator of KEM Pune.
