Dr. Elmouchi’s appointment follows the promotion of the current COO, Erik Wexler, to President and CEO of the organization.
Providence, one of the leading healthcare systems in the United States, has announced the appointment of Darryl A. Elmouchi, as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective January 2, 2025.
Dr. Elmouchi’s appointment follows the promotion of the current COO, Erik Wexler, to President and CEO of the organization.
Before his tenure at Corewell Health, Dr. Elmouchi served as president of Corewell Health West, a region that includes 10 hospitals and a large provider medical group. His leadership experience also includes roles such as chief medical officer of Spectrum Health and chair of the department of cardiovascular medicine at Spectrum Health.
Dr. Elmouchi’s academic credentials include a medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, an MBA from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, and a certificate in biostatistics from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He completed his internship, residency, and chief residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular medicine at the University of Michigan Health System.
Dr. Elmouchi, currently the COO at Corewell Health in Michigan, brings with him a wealth of experience in both clinical and operational leadership. At Corewell Health, which operates 21 hospitals and numerous outpatient centers, Dr. Elmouchi was responsible for overseeing strategy, operations, and clinical care delivery, in addition to managing financial performance. His expertise in leading operational transformation and improving patient outcomes has been a key driver of Corewell Health's success.
In his new role at Providence, Dr. Elmouchi will oversee the health system's operations, care delivery, and performance improvement initiatives. He will focus on identifying areas for improvement across Providence’s network, which spans seven western states and includes 51 hospitals and more than 1,100 physician clinics. The health system is committed to delivering high-quality, equitable care, and Dr. Elmouchi’s leadership will be central to driving these goals forward.
Commenting on the appointment, Erik Wexler, Providence’s outgoing COO and future President and CEO, stated, “Following an extensive nationwide search, it was clear that Dr. Elmouchi’s unique background as a physician and proven track record of successfully leading operational transformation, improving patient outcomes, and fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity, is a perfect fit for our organization.”
Wexler also expressed confidence in Dr. Elmouchi’s ability to maintain and enhance the health system’s commitment to innovation and patient care. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Elmouchi. He is a visionary who understands the importance of blending compassionate care with innovation and operational performance.”
Dr. Elmouchi himself acknowledged the opportunity to join Providence, citing the organization’s values as a key motivator for his decision. “Providence’s commitment to innovation, excellence, affordable healthcare, and its demonstrated Mission of service were incredibly compelling to me,” said Dr. Elmouchi. “I look forward to helping drive improvements that transform healthcare. It’s truly an exciting time to join this dynamic organization.”
