The impact of PMBJP is evident in the savings it offers to the public. In November 2023, consumers saved approximately INR 611.85 Cr by purchasing medicines from PMBJP Kendras instead of other retailers.

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), initiated by the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) to provide quality medicines at affordable prices, has recorded sales of INR 935.25 Cr as of November 30, 2023. This records a growth of over 38% in the fiscal year 2022-23 compared to the previous fiscal year.

During the month of November 2023 alone, the scheme achieved a notable 16.35% growth, with sales reaching INR 122.37 Cr at Maximum Retail Price (MRP) value. This demonstrated a significant increase from the INR 105.17 Cr recorded during the same period in the preceding fiscal year.

The cumulative number of PMBJP Kendras, dedicated outlets providing these affordable medicines, surpassed the 10,000 mark during November.

In the fiscal year 2022-23, PMBJP accomplished sales of INR 1,235.95 Cr (at MRP), marking a substantial growth of 38.3% compared to the sales of INR 893.56 Cr in the financial year 2021-22. Minister of State in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, Bhagwanth Khuba, reported the achievement of INR 935.25 Cr in sales until November 30, 2023, for the financial year 2023-24.

The impact of PMBJP is evident in the savings it offers to the public. In November 2023, consumers saved approximately INR 611.85 Cr by purchasing medicines from PMBJP Kendras instead of other retailers.

This follows the trend from the same period the previous year, where savings amounted to INR 631.02 Cr, underscoring the consistent affordability provided by the program.

Throughout November 2023, the government expanded the reach of PMBJP by opening 26 new Kendras, bringing the cumulative number to 10,006 by the end of the month. Earlier this year, the government had announced its ambitious plan to establish 10,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by December 31, 2023, a target that has now been successfully met.

With a product basket that has grown to 1,965 medicines and 293 surgical devices, up from 1,759 medicines and 280 surgical products a year ago, PMBJP has been instrumental in offering a diverse range of affordable healthcare solutions.

The program's success has prompted the government to set new goals, aiming to increase the number of Kendras to 25,000 by March 2026. The government is actively seeking applications from across the country, with approvals based on eligibility criteria under the scheme.

The central government is also committed to further enhancing PMBJP's product basket, targeting up to 2,000 medicines and 300 surgical items by March 2025. The initiative aligns with the overarching goal of making quality generic medicines widely accessible at prices 50%-90% lower than branded alternatives.

Launched in November 2008, PMBJP continues to make strides in achieving its objective of providing affordable and high-quality generic medicines to the masses. The program's success underscores its pivotal role in making healthcare more accessible and reducing the financial burden on the public.
