Prime Minister Narendra Modi is launching a series of healthcare projects valued at INR 12,850 Cr today, significantly enhancing India's healthcare infrastructure.
Key initiatives include expanding health coverage under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) to include all senior citizens above 70, which will benefit around 60 million people nationwide.
The extended PM-JAY scheme will offer free health coverage to senior citizens over 70, providing vital support to an underserved demographic.
This development underscores the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access and reducing financial strain on older citizens.
Additionally, the PM will inaugurate five new manufacturing units in five states under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for medical devices and bulk drugs.
These facilities will produce high-end medical devices, including body implants and critical care equipment, as well as essential bulk drugs.
Since September, the PLI schemes for these sectors have attracted investments of INR 4,025 Cr for bulk drugs and INR 995 Cr for medical devices.
According to Viranchi Shah, National President of the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA), “The PLI scheme for bulk drugs has significantly reduced India’s dependency on imported key starting materials (KSMs), bolstering domestic production.”
In a pioneering move, PM Modi will also introduce drone services at 11 tertiary healthcare institutions, including 10 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), enhancing the speed and reach of medical supply deliveries.
Additionally, helicopter emergency medical services will be launched from AIIMS Rishikesh, aimed at expediting emergency care delivery.
The PM is also set to inaugurate an Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital in Madhya Pradesh and lay the foundation for six additional ESIC facilities.
These projects will collectively benefit 5.5 million ESI beneficiaries, expanding access to healthcare services for workers and their families.
PM Modi will also inaugurate Phase II of India’s first All India Institute of Ayurveda, which includes an Ayurvedic hospital, drug manufacturing pharmacy, sports medicine unit, IT and startup incubation center, and central library.
This addition highlights the government’s focus on integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare.
These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to strengthening India’s healthcare system, benefiting diverse sections of the population across states.
