The institute will house 10 specialized OPDs, 2 additional OPDs for community services, and 14 advanced modular OTs, including a dedicated Lasik Surgery Unit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently laid the foundation stone for the Madhav Netralaya Premium Centre in Nagpur, Maharashtra

PM Modi was accompanied by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, among other leaders.

HOSMAC, Asia’s leading hospital planning, management, and design consultancy, is overseeing the turn-key design consultancy services for the facility.

Spanning 5.8 acres, this 250-bed super-specialty eye hospital is dedicated to providing high-quality yet affordable ophthalmic care.

The elliptical, eye-shaped structure is aligned along the east-west axis to optimize natural light while minimizing heat exposure. Rooftop solar panels with a 550 kWp capacity enhance sustainability and energy efficiency.

With a built-up area of approximately 4 lakh sq ft, the institute will house 10 specialized OPDs, 2 additional OPDs for community services (Samudayik Sewa), and 14 advanced modular operation theatres (OTs), including a dedicated Lasik Surgery Unit.

The center's Managing Director, (Retd) Major General Anil Bam, is an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.

The center will have various departments, including Cornea, refractive surgery, LASIK, Retinal Vitreous, Glaucoma, Cataract Surgery, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Ocular immunology, uveitis, Oculoplasty, oncology, and Low vision services.

The hospital will also feature an Eye Bank and a Research Centre. The BARN OT layout follows an open-plan surgical approach, where multiple patients receive treatment in designated areas, each equipped with ultra-clean air canopies to reduce infection risks.

To drive ophthalmic research and innovation, the hospital will establish cutting-edge facilities such as a gene therapy unit, biorepository, genetic lab, clinical trials center, outreach camp office, simulation lab, and vision research center.

Additionally, it will include a conference hall, a learning center, and an AYUSH department.

Dr Vivek Desai, Founder and Managing Director of HOSMAC, said, “It is an honour to be part of this visionary project, which will redefine eye care in Central India. At HOSMAC, we believe in designing healthcare institutions that are not only patient-centric but also equipped with the latest advancements in medical technology. Madhav Netralaya is set to be a world-class facility, ensuring accessible, high-quality, and specialized ophthalmic care for all.”

Leveraging its hospital planning and design expertise, HOSMAC will ensure that Madhav Netralaya meets international healthcare standards while integrating sustainable practices to create a future-ready medical institution.

In a related development, ZEISS India announced a strategic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to drive cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence (AI) for eye care.

As part of this initiative, ZEISS established a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to developing high-fidelity AI solutions aimed at improving vision care and training students in AI technologies.

The Spectrum Lab within the Department of Electrical Engineering at IISc supports the initiative. It seeks to leverage AI's potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline clinical workflows, and improve patient outcomes.
