The minister stated that once a new government is formed in Delhi, a formal request will be sent to the Center for the scheme’s implementation.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda has recently confirmed that the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) will soon be available to Delhi residents. The scheme, regarded as the world’s largest health insurance initiative, provides INR 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary healthcare.
"We will bring the PM-JAY scheme to Delhi as soon as possible," Nadda said. The program currently covers 55 crore individuals across 12.34 crore families, with its scope recently expanded to include senior citizens aged 70 and above.
The minister stated that once a new government is formed in Delhi, a formal request will be sent to the Centre for the scheme’s implementation.
Nadda also said that Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Mohalla Clinics would be upgraded and reviewed due to allegations of corruption. The Union Health Ministry will seek a report from the Delhi Health Minister and plans to rename the initiative as Ayushman Arogya Mandir under the central policy.
"There were serious lapses, including corruption allegations. The issue will be investigated, and structural changes will be made. We will ensure uniformity in clinic operations, aligning them with the centrally funded Ayushman Arogya Mandirs," Nadda added.
Mohalla Clinics, introduced by AAP in 2025 to improve primary healthcare access, have faced scrutiny over medicine quality and alleged cases of ‘ghost patients.’ The Anti-Corruption Bureau found patient data to be ‘fictitious,’ and a probe revealed that two private labs conducted 22 lakh tests between February and December 2023, of which 65,000 were fake. The Delhi government reportedly paid INR 4.63 Cr for these tests.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recommended a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in January. The Ministry of Home Affairs has since directed the agency to probe the matter.
