Olympus Corporation, a leading global medical technology company, has announced plans to set up a research and development (R&D) Offshore Development Centre (ODC) in Hyderabad.
This initiative, in collaboration with HCLTech, signals a significant expansion of Olympus's R&D footprint, which currently includes centers in Japan, the United States, and Europe.
The new ODC in Hyderabad will serve as a precursor to a more extensive in-house R&D facility that Olympus plans to establish in India in the coming years.
The decision underscores Olympus' commitment to tapping into the global pool of R&D talent and resources to drive advancements in medical technology.
Hyderabad, recognized as India's medtech hub, offers a rich talent pool and a well-established infrastructure, making it an ideal location for such an expansion.
The announcement was made during a meeting in the US between an official delegation from Telangana, including Ministers D Sridhar Babu and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and Olympus Corporation's Global senior VP-R&D Syed Naveed, chief innovation officer Andre Roggan participated virtually from Tokyo, Japan.
HCLTech will establish a dedicated product innovation center in Hyderabad to support Olympus' operations across the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
This facility is expected to begin operations by July 2024 and will play a crucial role in advancing Olympus' business expansion and medical technology development efforts.
The Telangana government, which hosted senior Olympus executives at the BioAsia 2024 event in Hyderabad, welcomed the investment.
Telangana Minister expressed excitement about Olympus' decision to invest in Hyderabad, noting that it marks a significant milestone for the city's medical devices ecosystem.
Babu highlighted that the investment would be a game-changer for the medical devices sector in India and reaffirmed the government's support for such initiatives.
"Olympus Corporation, one of the world's largest medical devices companies, choosing Hyderabad for its first R&D investment in India is a significant milestone for our city's medical devices ecosystem. This investment is poised to be a game-changer for the medical devices sector in India," Minister Babu added .
Roggan, Olympus's chief innovation officer, noted the company's decade-long partnership with HCLTech in core engineering and R&D services.
"Our collaboration will enhance Olympus' engineering capabilities and unlock new innovations that enable quality healthcare through technology," he noted.
Roggan added that since establishing Olympus Medical Systems in India in 2009, the company has continuously expanded its operations in the country.
In addition to the ODC, Olympus will collaborate with AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad on joint research projects.
This partnership aims to leverage the clinical expertise and insights from one of India's premier healthcare institutions to develop innovative medical solutions that address the evolving needs of patients worldwide.
Olympus highlighted the potential for this collaboration to significantly advance medical device innovation and manufacturing in Telangana.
With this strategic expansion, Olympus is set to play a pivotal role in making Hyderabad a global hub for medical device innovation and healthcare technology, further solidifying India's position in the global medtech landscape.
