This acquisition establishes Novant Health as the state’s largest urgent care provider, with 52 Doctors Care clinics and 20 Progressive Physical Therapy locations now added to its network.

In a major healthcare acquisition, Novant Health finalized its purchase of UCI Medical Affiliates, from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina on November 4, expanding its healthcare footprint significantly in South Carolina.

This acquisition establishes Novant Health as the state’s largest urgent care provider, with 52 Doctors Care clinics and 20 Progressive Physical Therapy locations now added to its network.

The deal, initially announced in July 2024, brings Novant Health closer to its goal of increasing healthcare access and support for communities across the Carolinas.

With this acquisition, nearly 200 physicians and advanced practice providers will now operate under the Novant Health umbrella, enhancing the range of urgent and routine care services offered to residents statewide.

Enhanced Access to Urgent and Physical Therapy Care

Doctors Care, a leading name in urgent care since 1981, has long been a well-established provider in South Carolina, with clinics in numerous urban and rural areas. By integrating these facilities into Novant Health’s operations, the network aims to streamline access to timely medical care, from primary care needs to minor emergency services.

Additionally, the acquisition of Progressive Physical Therapy clinics offers patients expanded options for rehabilitative care, supporting post-injury and postoperative recovery.

According to a spokesperson from Novant Health, "Bringing Doctors Care and Progressive Physical Therapy into our network is a critical step in providing convenient and comprehensive healthcare solutions. South Carolinians will have greater access to quality care, ensuring they receive the appropriate level of treatment closer to home."

The acquired clinics will integrate with Novant Health’s existing services, including three South Carolina hospitals and the Ridgeland clinic established with Ochsner Health. Known as Ochsner and Novant Health 65 Plus—Okatie, this clinic focuses on delivering senior care solutions, a crucial need in many communities.

This acquisition allows Novant Health to bridge urgent and specialized care while aligning with its mission to provide quality healthcare across all life stages.

Novant Health operates over 900 locations, including 19 hospitals and 750 physician clinics, and serves as a critical healthcare provider across North and South Carolina.

A representative from Doctors Care added, “This partnership strengthens our ability to deliver urgent care across South Carolina, something we have focused on since we opened our first center in Columbia. Patients will benefit from a more cohesive system, where urgent and rehabilitative care can be efficiently coordinated.”
