The Scan and Share service is now used across over 8,270 healthcare facilities in 579 districts across 35 states and Union Territories of India.

The National Health Authority (NHA) has reached a new level in its healthcare digitization mission by generating 4 Cr tokens for outpatient department (OPD) registrations through the ABHA-based Scan and Share service.

Launched in October 2022 under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), this service has changed the patient registration process, particularly benefiting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with mobility challenges.

The ABHA-based Scan and Share service allows patients to register for OPD appointments by scanning a QR code displayed at the OPD registration counter and instantly sharing their ABHA profile for registration.

This paperless system removes the need to wait in long queues for appointments, making the patient experience more efficient.

The Scan and Share service is now used across over 8,270 healthcare facilities in 579 districts across 35 states and Union Territories of India. On average, 2.2 Lakh individuals use the service daily, demonstrating its practicality and popularity.

The service is available in 5,875 public and 2,845 private healthcare facilities, showing broad adoption across the healthcare sector.

Leading States & Hospitals

Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Jammu and Kashmir have led the adoption. Uttar Pradesh has generated the most tokens at 1.11 Cr, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 70.35 Lakh, Karnataka with 46.61 Lakh, and Jammu and Kashmir with 41.81 Lakh tokens.

The ABDM public dashboard provides insights into the service’s usage, with notable activity recorded at AIIMS in Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Raipur.

16 hospitals from Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir are among the top facilities for OPD token generation using the ABHA-based Scan and Share service.

Government hospitals, including AIIMS in New Delhi with 18.3 Lakh tokens, and those in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Raipur with 7.9 Lakh, 6.1 Lakh, and 5.7 Lakh tokens respectively, have effectively facilitated OPD registrations.

Discussing the importance of digital healthcare services, Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, CEO of the NHA stated, "The Scan and Share feature for OPD registration under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is changing the way patients engage with healthcare services in India.’’

According to the NHA CEO, the Scan and Share benefits approximately 2,20,000 patients daily. By facilitating secure and quick access to comprehensive health information, it enhances healthcare delivery, ensures data security and patient privacy, and contributes to the goal of building a connected and interoperable digital health ecosystem.

Among all token generations, approximately 76% are first-time users, while 24% are repeat users, highlighting its wide adoption.

To further drive adoption among hospitals and Digital Solution Companies (DSCs) providing technology to healthcare facilities, the NHA offers financial incentives through the ABDM's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) for Scan and Share transactions and the generation of electronic health records.
