This annual observance recognizes doctors' crucial contributions to safeguarding the health and well-being of individuals and communities across India.

National Doctor's Day, celebrated on July 1st, honors the birth and death anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician, freedom fighter, and former Chief Minister of West Bengal.

This annual observance recognizes doctors' crucial contributions to safeguarding the health and well-being of individuals and communities across India.

Dr Roy's legacy is deeply ingrained in India's medical history. He was instrumental in establishing institutions such as the Indian Medical Association and the Medical Council of India. His dedication to healthcare earned him the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Theme & Significance

The theme for National Doctor’s Day 2024 is “Healing Hands, Caring Hearts.” This theme underscores the dedication, compassion, and empathy that doctors bring to their practice. Their role in saving and improving lives is crucial, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

National Doctor’s Day is not just about recognizing the contributions of doctors but also about expressing gratitude. This day serves as a reminder of doctors' essential services in diagnosing illnesses, providing treatment, and saving lives. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of healthcare and encourage society to appreciate the efforts of medical professionals.

Posting on X, PM Narendra Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to improving India’s health infrastructure. He stressed that doctors deserve widespread respect for their skill in handling complex medical challenges.

"Our Government is fully committed to improving the health infrastructure in India and ensuring doctors get the widespread respect they deserve," the PM noted.

A Message from the Healthcare Community

During the pandemic, doctors were at the forefront, facing unprecedented challenges. Their commitment to patient care and ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances showcased their resilience.

As we celebrate National Doctor’s Day, we must acknowledge these efforts and the sacrifices made by healthcare professionals. On the special day, several healthcare professionals have shared their thoughts with DHN.

Dr M. A. Raja, director of oncology services at the MGM Cancer Institute, shared a vital message. He said, “Dispel the fear and do not have misunderstandings or believe myths about cancer. Also, realise the limitations of medical care and expect sincerity, care, and the best medical treatment from the doctors, not miracles. For doctors, empathy and a caring attitude are equally important to skill and knowledge."

He further noted that patients are the teachers for doctors, and the solution for patients is to go to the right doctor and get the right treatment.

Dr Sanjeev Mohanty, senior consultant & HOD, ENT, head & neck surgery, MGM Healthcare, Chennai, said, “On this special day, the healing hands of doctors sync with the caring hearts of the caregiver for optimum outcomes. It acknowledges the vital roles both play in the healing process. Doctors are an extension of the family of the suffering patients, and there is nothing better than this endearing relationship, which is built on trust, faith, and understanding through thick and thin. A doctor's "healing hands" represent the skilled and trained expertise that diagnoses, treats, and cures physical ailments. Meanwhile, caregivers' "caring hearts" embody the compassion, empathy, and kindness that nurture a patient's emotional and spiritual well-being.”

He further noted that together, they form a powerful synergy that addresses the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This synergy, according to him is essential for holistic healing, comfort, and support, especially during challenging times for both doctor and patient.

“This bond highlights the importance of collaboration and the complementary roles healthcare professionals and caregivers play in delivering comprehensive healthcare with the desired outcomes,” Dr Mohanty added.

Dr Shyam Sunder K R, senior consultant—interventional cardiology Aster RV Hospital, said, “The concept of "healing hands" underscores the compassionate and skilled care doctors provide, particularly in heart health. This combines the technical expertise required for complex procedures like angioplasty with the compassionate care that fosters patient trust and comfort.”

Talking about the importance of doctors in our society, Dr Sunder noted the following way how the "healing hands" of a doctor contribute to heart health:

  1. Technical Expertise Precision in Procedures: Whether performing angioplasty, stent placement, or other interventions, a doctor's steady and skilled hands are crucial in ensuring successful outcomes.

  1. Diagnosis & Treatment: Accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plans rely on the doctor’s thorough understanding of cardiovascular diseases and their manifestations. Compassionate, careful, and effective doctor-patient communication helps the patients understand their conditions and treatment options better, reducing anxiety and fostering a collaborative care environment.

  1. Emotional Support: Providing reassurance and emotional support can significantly impact a patient's recovery and overall experience.

  1. Holistic Approach: Addressing not only the physical but also the emotional and psychological aspects of heart health ensures comprehensive care.

  1. Trust and Confidence-building Relationships: A compassionate doctor-patient relationship builds trust, essential for patients to follow through with treatment plans and lifestyle changes.

  1. Empathy: Understanding patients' fears and concerns allows doctors to offer more personalized and effective care.

  1. Long-Term Health Preventive Care: Educating patients on lifestyle changes, risk factors, and preventive measures helps in managing heart health proactively.

  1. Continuous Monitoring: Regular follow-ups and monitoring ensure that any issues are detected and managed early.

According to Dr Sunder, the "healing hands" of a doctor are not just about the physical act of healing but also about providing comprehensive, empathetic, and personalized care that addresses the entirety of a patient's heart health.

Looking Forward

As we celebrate National Doctor’s Day 2024, we must continue supporting our healthcare heroes. Enhancing health infrastructure, providing adequate resources, and ensuring the well-being of doctors are steps towards a healthier society.

Doctors' commitment and compassion inspire us to strive for better healthcare.
