Nabla launches AI note-taking assistant in 31 new languages, addressing language barriers in US healthcare. The tool is already available in English, Spanish, and French.

Nabla, an AI-driven company, has introduced 31 new languages for its clinical note-taking assistant.

This expansion includes key languages including Mandarin, Russian, Portuguese, and Vietnamese, addressing a significant communication gap in US healthcare. The tool, already available in English, Spanish, and French, now supports 35 languages.

According to Nabla, over 66 million US residents do not speak English as their first language. This communication barrier contributes to medical errors, costing the healthcare system between $60 billion and $80 billion annually.

By adding more languages, Nabla aims to mitigate these issues by making its AI tool more accessible to non-English-speaking patients.

About Note-Taking AI Tool

Nabla's tool allows healthcare providers to select the patient's preferred language before starting the note-taking process. Patients can receive summaries and follow-up instructions in their chosen language, ensuring better comprehension. However, the notes saved in electronic health records will be generated in English for compliance reasons.

The beta version of these languages was rolled out in April, allowing physicians to test the system for accuracy.

Nabla’s leadership, including co-founder and COO Delphine Groll, emphasized that user feedback was integral to refining the new language features.

"Customers have been requesting more language options for a long time. Mandarin, in particular, has been highly requested by potential clients on the West Coast," Groll stated.

Currently, 6% of Nabla users operate the tool in a language other than English. In Florida, 14% of users utilize the Spanish language option, demonstrating the demand for multilingual support.

Groll explained that their goal is to improve communication and trust between physicians and patients, which leads to better health outcomes.

"As a global company, we take health equity very seriously," Groll said. "From the start, we’ve focused on improving accessibility, and expanding our language offerings has always been a part of that roadmap," he added.

Nabla supports many languages, including Arabic dialects, Hindi, Bengali, Japanese, Korean, and others. By providing healthcare information in patients' first languages, Nabla hopes to increase adherence to treatment plans and improve patient care.
