Government-run MNJ Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad has recently installed Da Vinci Robotic Systems to treat cancer patients free of cost, especially those hailing from economically weaker sections. This move aligns with the hospital’s objective to offer advanced cancer treatment to more patients in need.

The newly installed Robotic Systems are known for their advanced set of instrumentation and precision. It translates the surgeon's hand movements at the console in real-time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the surgery.

Moreover, the robot’s tiny wrist-like instruments, which are controlled by the doctor, move with great precision and range of motion that enable the surgeon to remove tumours present at tricky locations.

Reportedly, the cost for such robotic surgeries is around INR 6 Lakh to INR 8 Lakh while the installation costs around INR 32 Cr.

Additionally, the hospital is conducting these surgeries free of cost along with a free health insurance scheme for the patients. Till now, 16 patients have been treated by the Da Vinci Robotic Systems at MNJ Hospital.

Sharing her views, Jayalatha, director, MNJ Cancer Hospitals, said "We have a group of dedicated 20 senior cancer surgeons who will spearhead the robotic surgeries. Already, three surgeons have started performing surgeries while others are undergoing intense training. These systems help patients recover from cancer treatment quickly.’’

She further said, prior training is needed to carry surgeries in such precision systems. As per Jayalatha, the hospital’s senior surgeons are directly learning from their counterparts in other major health care institutions where similar systems are installed.

“These high-end systems are a boon for poor patients, who otherwise have to shell out a small fortune to access such treatment modalities in private health care facilities," she added.

Founded by Nawab Mehdi Nawaz Jung, the hospital was inaugurated by the first PM of India in the year 1955. Government-run MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre aims to provide comprehensive cancer care.

It is the only comprehensive tertiary cancer centre of the state government to provide surgery, radiotherapy, medical oncology, and palliative care services free of cost to all patients below the poverty line. The hospital caters not only to the needs of the patients of the state of Andhra Pradesh but also to patients from neighbouring border states and even countries including Nigeria.

In another similar event, Intuitive and Max Healthcare collaborated to set up an observation centre for robotic surgeries. The Centre is strategically designed to offer an unprecedented platform for healthcare professionals to engage in comprehensive learning experiences within multi-disciplinary robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) programs.
