MicrobioTx plans to roll out GFT in various cities across India to make gut health insights accessible to a broader audience.
Bangalore-based healthtech startup MicrobioTx has launched India’s first finger-prick-based gut microbiome test, the Gut Function Test (GFT).
Traditionally requiring stool samples, gut microbiome profiling can now be performed using a simple blood sample, eliminating the logistical challenges of stool collection.
The GFT has been clinically validated through trials at prominent Indian research institutes and recently secured approval from the Indian regulatory body.
Reportedly, the product launch is backed by funding from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), facilitated through the Institute of Life Science, Bhubaneswar.
MicrobioTx emphasizes that improving access to gut microbiome testing could promote better health outcomes. A balanced gut microbiome has been linked to weight management, immunity enhancement, and overall physiological health benefits.
Sharing thoughts, Akanksha Gupta, Co-founder of MicrobioTx, said, “We have taken a data-driven approach to develop an AI-based model to profile the gut microbiome. While stool-based tests to profile gut microbiome have existed for many years, only a small number of gut health enthusiasts undergo these tests. Some of the reasons are the inconvenience of collecting stool samples, long turn-around time, and the prohibitive cost of the test.”
The GFT aims to tackle these issues by removing the barriers typically associated with microbiome testing.
According to Gupta, this more straightforward testing method has the potential to increase uptake among those who may have previously avoided testing due to logistical or financial concerns.
The concept behind GFT is rooted in emerging scientific research linking gut microbiome health with various health metrics.
By using a finger-prick sample, MicrobioTx hopes to provide a more user-friendly way for individuals to monitor their gut health without invasive sample collection.
Backed by DPIIT’s grant through the Institute of Life Science, the GFT has undergone rigorous testing and clinical trials, confirming its reliability and effectiveness for the Indian population.
