Under this initiative, the Meta CEO aims to create a robust computing system to assist researchers in studying diseased cells and predicting their behaviour in healthy individuals using artificial intelligence (AI).
CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have recently expressed their joint commitment to eliminating all human diseases by the year 2100 under their Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI).
Under this initiative, the Meta CEO aims to create a robust computing system to assist researchers in studying diseased cells and predicting their behaviour in healthy individuals using artificial intelligence (AI).
Reportedly, the AI tool will undergo extensive training using genetic and cellular data.
Moreover, with the help of the database, the AI tool will be capable of predicting diseases or potential medications by simulating experiments on a "virtual cell" eliminating the need for human cells and thereby offering valuable insights into potential outcomes.
Typically, the Al models operate on predictive interpretations, attempting to forecast the most likely next word in a sentence. In this context, the AI will use a similar analogy to predict how a cell responds to infections and rare diseases within the human body.
An article on the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's website describes the new cluster as "one of the most powerful high-performance computing systems for nonprofit life science research in the world."
According to reports, the data generated could lead to groundbreaking discoveries that enable the curing and prevention of diseases, ultimately reshaping healthcare by the end of the century.
Priscilla Chan explained in a video note on the organisation's website, by saying, "Al models could predict how an immune cell responds to an infection, what occurs at the cellular level when a child is born with a rare disease, or even how a patient's body will react to a new medication."
Founded in 2015, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is a philanthropic organisation established by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan.
The initiative aims to build a more inclusive and healthy future for everyone. By advancing human potential and promoting equality in health, education, scientific research, and energy sectors.
Talking about the growing relevance of AI in healthcare, governments and healthcare fraternities are coming up to collaborate and harness the power of AI to enhance healthcare to the fullest.
One such instance is when the AYUSH Ministry utilised AI in traditional medicines with the guidance of UN agencies and a comprehensive IT backbone for traditional medicine known as the 'œAYUSH GRID'' for an integrative holistic healthcare model of service delivery.
In another instance, recently, a gall bladder surgery was conducted on an 83-year-old man in Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, with the help of AI technology. The usage of AI-based technology for complex surgery was successful despite complications resulting in the patient's improved condition post-surgery.
