Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai, has successfully conducted Maharashtra’s first Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (RNSM) with TiLoop Reconstruction, a significant step forward in breast cancer surgery.

The procedure, performed on a 43-year-old patient, offers improved oncological safety and aesthetic outcomes while preserving the natural breast appearance.

The surgery was led by Dr Sandip Bipte, Consultant Breast Surgeon at Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai, and a multidisciplinary team.

The patient, identified as Jyoti (name changed), was diagnosed with right breast cancer in 2024. Genetic testing confirmed a BRCA gene mutation, indicating a 70-80% lifetime risk of developing cancer in the left breast. Following this, she opted for RNSM with immediate TiLoop-assisted reconstruction.

"The four-hour procedure was performed seamlessly, and the patient achieved an excellent cosmetic outcome. She was discharged the next day, experiencing a smooth and rapid recovery," stated Dr Bipte.

The RNSM procedure preserves the skin and nipple, maintains a natural breast contour, and results in minimal scarring compared to conventional mastectomy. It also ensures better sensory preservation, faster healing, and reduced post-operative discomfort.

Advancement Over Traditional Techniques

Breast reconstruction in India has traditionally relied on autologous tissue techniques such as LD flap, DIEP flap, and TRAM flap, which involve longer surgeries, additional scars, and extended hospital stays.

The robotic-assisted approach offers a minimally invasive alternative, reducing trauma and expediting recovery.

Dr Suresh H Advani, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre, said, This milestone is not just a technical achievement; it reflects the evolution of compassionate cancer care. By embracing such advancements, we prioritize patient dignity and emotional resilience while ensuring the best possible treatment outcomes."

Echoing similar views, Dr Jayanti Thumsi, Lead & Robotic Surgeon - Breast Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre, Bangalore, noted, "Breast cancer surgery is evolving, providing women with better recovery and improved aesthetic outcomes. Robotic-assisted mastectomy enhances precision and overall patient care. The focus is not just survival but ensuring confidence and dignity post-surgery."
