The first instances of telemedicine can be traced back to the early 1900s in the Netherlands, where heart rhythms were transmitted over the telephone. This was followed by transmissions to radio consultation centers in Europe in the 1920s. While in the 1940s, radiographic images were transmitted by telephone between cities in Pennsylvania.

The demand for virtual healthcare services has surged, driven by factors such as the need for convenient access, especially in rural areas, and the imperative of remote care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mumbai, India's vibrant metropolis, shines as an epicenter of healthcare innovation. A plethora of telemedicine startups in Mumbai are leading the charge, utilizing cutting-edge technology to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers.

Leading Telehealth Cos in Mumbai

Plum Telehealth

Plum Telehealth offers employees and their families instant access to virtual healthcare from their in-house doctors.

Founded in 2021, by Abhishek Poddar (CEO) & Saurabh Arora (CTO), the healthtech startup offers 24/7 access to doctors, 1:1 consultation over video calls, appointment bookings, and instant digital prescriptions all in one place. They also provide timely reminders by email, SMS, and WhatsApp.

Moreover, users can choose doctors based on language and gender. Instant digital prescriptions and easy-to-book follow-up appointments are some of the features of Plum.

Initially, Plum introduced 11 specialties including ENT, dermatology, and OB-GYN. Later, the startup integrated into more specialties such as mental health and internal medicine

Currently, Plum Telehealth houses 20+ specialties available from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week.

PharmEasy

Mumbai-based PharmEasy was founded in 2015 by Dharmil Sheth and Dhaval Shah. The healthtech startup is a consumer healthcare app that provides consumers with on-demand, home-delivered access to a wide range of prescription, OTC pharmaceuticals, other consumer healthcare products, comprehensive diagnostic test services, and teleconsultations.

It helps patients to connect with local pharmacy stores and diagnostic centers enabling them to order medicines, healthcare products, and diagnostic tests.

Apart from medicine delivery, PharmEasy offers virtual consultations and patient education. In FY21, PharmEasy delivered 8.8 million orders.

Pyramed Telemedicine

Founded in 2020, Pyramed Telemedicine is a social healthcare venture that provides innovative telemedicine solutions. It was founded by Dr Ketan Parikh, a consultant pediatric surgeon of Jaslok Hospital, Nanavati Hospital, Apollo Hospitals, L H Hiranandani Hospital, and SRCC Children’s Hospitals.

Pyramed pioneered the concept of ‘The Pyramed Model’ of healthcare in India. It is internationally acclaimed as the ideal healthcare model where the primary doctors stay in control of the healthcare episode and coordinate with the required specialists to ensure that the patient has easy access to specialized opinions and interventions.

Based on this, Pyramed offers doctor-to-doctor video consultations, and joint video consultations on the Pyramed App, which allows primary doctors to digitally access and conduct a joint video consultation with the specialist in the presence of the patient.

Further, the startup is also associated with DigiSwasthya to ensure wider accessibility of specialty and super specialty doctors, pan India.

Their vision is to make expert and specialized medical opinions accessible to patients in every corner of the country and contribute towards ‘Health for All’.

HealWell24

Founded in 2017 by Chittaranjan Mishra, Dushyant Bhatt, J K Singha, and RK Ningthem Devi, HealWell24 is a healthcare marketplace and doctor-patient network platform.

The Mumbai-based startup offers online consultation with specialized doctors across India and doorstep telemedicine services such as laboratory tests and prescription delivery.

HealWell also has an app-based platform that allows patients to request doctor’s consultations, book appointments, buy healthcare plans, and maintain digital health records.
