The AI lab will focus on using advanced machine learning models to enhance diagnosis and treatment.
King George's Medical University (KGMU) is set to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) lab aimed at enhancing patient care, teaching, and training. This will be the first AI lab of its kind in a government medical institution in Uttar Pradesh.
The announcement was made by KGMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Soniya Nityanand, during the second day of the 25th National Conference of the Indian Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IASCON).
KGMU is in discussions with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) to collaborate on the project.
Professor RK Garg, head of the KGMU research cell, emphasized the importance of integrating modern technology into healthcare.
"We cannot afford to stay behind in this era. The collaboration with IIT-Kanpur is crucial for developing AI models," he stated.
The AI lab will focus on using advanced machine learning models to enhance diagnosis and treatment.
"The proposed AI lab will utilize advanced machine learning models that function similarly to human learning. These models will be trained on various patient data sets, including symptoms and medical imaging, allowing them to differentiate between conditions like tuberculosis and pneumonia based on specific indicators," he said.
Garg added that KGMU will provide the necessary resources for the project, including robust hardware and cloud storage for data management.
Training engineers in programming languages such as Python will be a key component of the lab's development, ensuring the creation of sophisticated AI models capable of interpreting complex medical data.
In another digital health initiative, just days back, IIT Kanpur & ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth signed a MoU for the Uttar Pradesh Digital Health Stack project. The Digital Health Stack will be implemented within the public healthcare system of the state and aims to enhance the state's healthcare infrastructure.
ICICI Foundation will provide significant funding over several years to support the project’s development. This initiative integrates advanced technology, medical research, and innovation to enhance healthcare services throughout the state.
IIT Kanpur also collaborated with the National Health Authority (NHA) to develop a federated learning platform with features such as a quality-preserving database, AI benchmarking, and a consent management system under ABDM.
