KWIN City is expected to strengthen Karnataka’s position as a global medical tourism hub by offering world-class healthcare infrastructure and services.
The Karnataka government has taken a major step toward developing the ambitious KWIN City (Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation) project, which will span 5,800 acres near Bengaluru.
As part of its vision to establish KWIN City as a global hub for education, research, and healthcare innovation, the state has begun signing agreements with international universities.
So far, the state government has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with nine foreign universities, including St. John’s University (New York City) and the University of Liverpool.
These partnerships aim to strengthen research and innovation activities, foster education cooperation, and establish a joint working group to drive collaborative initiatives.
Professor Tariq Ali, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement and Partnerships at the University of Liverpool, highlighted the importance of these collaborations.
“Our visit to Karnataka allowed us to explore numerous opportunities for international cooperation, particularly following India’s regulatory changes that enable joint programs and student mobility. Meetings with national and state leaders have paved the way for new and expanded initiatives in Karnataka and across India, which we are eager to pursue,” he said.
KWIN City, located 50 km from Bengaluru, is envisioned as a world-class healthcare and medical research hub.
At a roundtable discussion on ‘KWIN City and the Healthcare Sector’ held on February 12, Sharan Prakash Patil, Karnataka’s Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, and Livelihood, emphasized the city’s role in transforming the healthcare landscape.
“KWIN City will focus on medical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and cutting-edge healthcare services. This project aims to attract investments in R&D, diagnostics, and medical technology, contributing significantly to Karnataka’s growing healthcare industry,” Patil said.
With Karnataka’s healthcare market expanding at an annual rate of 22%, the demand for high-quality medical services is rising.
KWIN City is expected to strengthen Karnataka’s position as a global medical tourism hub by offering world-class healthcare infrastructure and services.
Patil noted that Karnataka has already established itself as a leading destination for international patients.
With KWIN City, the state plans to provide advanced infrastructure to further enhance medical tourism and specialized healthcare services.
“Major projects like this require strong political will. With our government’s favorable policies and incentives, investment in the healthcare sector can accelerate significantly,” he added.
The project also presents opportunities to establish biotech and pharmaceutical industries, leading hospitals, and healthcare enterprises.
This will not only boost Karnataka’s economy but also improve healthcare accessibility and drive innovation.
Karnataka Minister for Commerce and Industries, Infrastructure, MB Patil, said, “We aim to position Karnataka as a global healthcare leader by leveraging AI-driven diagnostics, mRNA vaccines, antimicrobial resistance research, and digital health innovations such as telehealth, wearables, and robotics. Strengthening research, business, and healthcare collaborations remains a key priority.”
