AI-powered cameras will be used to monitor movement, detect intrusions, and recognize suspicious activities with facial recognition, officials confirmed.

To strengthen security on medical campuses, Karnataka has decided to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into hospitals, medical colleges, and hostels.

This decision follows the tragic rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, which triggered widespread protests.

State officials confirmed that AI-powered cameras will be deployed to monitor people's movements, detect intrusions, and recognize suspicious activities using facial recognition technology.

"AI-based face recognition cameras will help identify suspicious individuals and activities, providing an added layer of security," an official explained. These measures aim to create safer environments for students, healthcare professionals, and other staff members on medical campuses.

Comprehensive Safety Measures Announced

On August 13, Karnataka Minister for Medical Education & Skill Development, Sharan Prakash Patil, chaired a high-level meeting at Vikasa Soudha to discuss further security measures.

Among the new initiatives are color-coded ID badges, personal security alarms, SOS remotes, and hooters. Additionally, self-defense training, crisis response programs, and improved transportation services will be provided to enhance personal safety on campuses.

The proposed safety upgrades include the establishment of a 24/7 central control room, staffed by ex-army personnel, which will monitor CCTV footage and personal security alarms.

This control room will also run a round-the-clock helpline for emergencies. Further, the

government plans to install more CCTV cameras, improve street lighting, and set up separate duty rooms and restrooms for male and female staff.

Institutional Accountability & Continuous Auditing

Minister Patil highlighted the importance of regular security audits in medical institutions, proposing monthly meetings to review and update safety protocols.

He also mandated thorough background checks for all security personnel. To ensure the safety of women healthcare workers, Patil recommended 24/7 canteen facilities on campuses, so female staff do not need to leave the premises during late hours.

A state-level panel will be formed to oversee the implementation of these security measures, with institution heads held accountable for any lapses in safety.

In a similar development, last month, the Supreme Court directed the Secretary of the Union Health Ministry to collaborate with Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police across states and Union territories to implement crucial safety measures for doctors and healthcare professionals.

Additionally, the Court instructed the newly formed National Task Force (NTF) to engage with representatives from various stakeholders, including interns, resident doctors, senior residents, nurses, and paramedical staff, to address their safety concerns.
