The new IOL, built on the TECNIS platform, offers twice the contrast sensitivity in low-light conditions compared to the PanOptix IOL.
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has announced the expanded US rollout of its latest presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (PC-IOL), TECNIS Odyssey.
Designed to provide patients with a continuous full range of vision, TECNIS Odyssey aims to reduce the need for glasses by offering clear sight at near, intermediate, and far distances, even in low-light conditions.
The new IOL, built on the TECNIS platform, offers twice the contrast sensitivity in low-light conditions compared to the PanOptix IOL.
According to J&J, patients with TECNIS Odyssey can read 14% smaller print on average than those with PanOptix, with 93% reporting minimal or no halos, glare, or starbursts one month after surgery.
Peter Menziuso, Company Group Chairman for Vision at Johnson & Johnson, noted the positive impact of the TECNIS Odyssey IOL.
He said, “More than 14,000 eyes have benefited from this new full-range IOL. Patients report exceptional visual outcomes after surgery, so we’re excited to expand the rollout across the US. Cataract surgery offers patients a rare chance to improve their vision, and this lens provides clear sight at every distance without the need for glasses.”
Cataracts affect 20.5 million Americans aged 40 and above, but only 6.1 million have had surgery. Left untreated, cataracts can significantly impair vision over time. Many patients also suffer from presbyopia, which makes focusing on near objects difficult. TECNIS Odyssey offers a solution to address both issues during cataract surgery.
Dr George O Waring IV, Medical Director at the Waring Vision Institute, praised TECNIS Odyssey as one of the most advanced IOLs. “This lens sets a new standard for full vision range, providing excellent contrast in day and night conditions and significantly reducing visual disturbances like halos and glare. The level of contrast sensitivity is something we haven’t seen with previous PC-IOLs.”
The TECNIS Odyssey IOL features proprietary technology that enhances visual clarity, even in low-light settings such as driving at night or reading in dim lighting. The company said 92% of patients reported satisfaction with their night-time vision, including seeing street signs and steps.
The lens also features a unique diffractive surface that eliminates gaps in vision across all distances, ensuring uninterrupted visual clarity from near to far.
Johnson & Johnson reported that 96% of patients were satisfied with their ability to read smartphones or tablets, and 94% expressed satisfaction with their overall vision without glasses.
As part of the US rollout, J&J is launching “TECNIS Odyssey IOL Peer Connect.” This initiative facilitates conversations between healthcare professionals and surgeons who have early access to the technology, enabling them to share insights and experiences regarding the IOL.
In addition to the US market, TECNIS Odyssey has received regulatory approval in Japan, the European Union, Korea, Canada, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand.
