India to Play Key Role in Global Biotechnology by 2025: Minister

India will play a key role in the global biotechnology revolution in 2025, Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh has said recently at an event.

Dr Singh stated that India’s biotechnology industry has grown from $10 billion in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024. It is projected to reach $300 billion by 2030. He also highlighted the Bio-E3 policy as a critical step for the sector's growth.

The minister further emphasized India's leadership in vaccine production, accounting for 60% of global supply. India also has the second-largest number of USFDA-approved manufacturing facilities outside the United States.

“India is at the center of a global biotechnology boom, driving innovation, creating jobs, and enhancing environmental commitments,” Dr. Singh said.

He highlighted the role of startups in developing products like non-human milk and other sustainable solutions. He also noted that biodiversity and natural resources are key drivers of India’s biotechnology success.

Additionally, the government has allocated INR 1,000 Cr in 2024 to support biotechnology innovation. Dr Singh cited ongoing initiatives like the Deep Sea Mission and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, which involve 60% private sector funding.
