Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel, who served as the event's lead speaker, emphasized the critical role of social determinants of health in shaping national health outcomes.

India has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing social determinants of health (SDH) during the G20 Joint Finance-Health Task Force (JFHTF) High-Level Meeting, held alongside the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The session, focused on "prioritizing investments in the health sector, advancing debt-for-health swap arrangements, and the role of social determinants of health," saw India take a leading role in discussions aimed at improving global health equity.

Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel, who served as a lead speaker at the event, emphasized the critical role of social determinants of health in shaping national health outcomes.

She highlighted how factors such as housing, sanitation, water access, and income security play a pivotal role in improving public health.

During her address, Patel noted the significant progress India has made in these areas, mentioning flagship government initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

These programs have brought transformative changes to the health and well-being of citizens across India, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Debt-for-Health Swaps & Health Financing

The session also explored the concept of debt-for-health swaps, a financial mechanism that could help countries ease their debt burden while making critical investments in health systems.

Patel pointed out that leveraging such swaps could directly address SDH challenges, and emphasized the intersection of health and finance in reducing the impact of future health crises and alleviating economic pressures on healthcare systems.

While India noted the promising potential of debt-for-health swaps, the delegation stressed the need for further pilot programs and stakeholder engagement to assess the feasibility of this initiative.

Showcasing India's Flagship Health Programmes

India also took the opportunity to showcase the success of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance scheme.

PM-JAY provides INR 5 Lakh of coverage per family annually, significantly improving access to secondary and tertiary healthcare services, especially for those suffering from non-communicable diseases.

The scheme has not only expanded healthcare access but also enhanced health outcomes across the nation.

During the session, Patel underscored the importance of data availability and standardization in shaping effective health policies.

She highlighted that improved cross-sectoral data on SDH indicators is essential for governments to make informed decisions and prioritize health investments that yield measurable results.

Patel urged G20 nations to adopt a unified approach to data collection and analysis, ensuring credibility and global recognition, which would facilitate better policy-making and enable evidence-based healthcare reforms.

India's delegation concluded by reiterating its commitment to promoting health equity through continued investments in SDH, global partnerships, and evidence-based policymaking.
