The collaboration aims to harness the potential of a patented technology titled 'A biodegradable polymeric composite with enzymatic degradation for ureteral stent and its preparation methods.’

IIT Roorkee and Gurugram-based integrated, research-based medical equipment manufacturing company, UnivLabs Technologies has joined hands for advanced urology and medical device technology

The organizations have inked a Technology Transfer Agreement and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to translate research findings into practical applications, specifically focusing on technology related to ureteral stents.

The collaboration aims to harness the potential of a patented technology titled 'A biodegradable polymeric composite with enzymatic degradation for ureteral stent and its preparation methods.’

Sharing thoughts, Dr Anil Mandhani, director. UnivLabs Technologies, said, "The development of a total biodegradable ureteral stent addresses several key challenges associated with conventional stents, offering significant benefits in terms of patient comfort, reduced complications, and improved clinical outcomes.’’

He further noted that the collaborative effort between IIT Roorkee and UnivLabs aims to introduce a biodegradable ureteral stent that offers improved patient comfort, reduced complications, and enhanced clinical outcomes.

What the Collaboration Seeks?

The cornerstone of this collaboration lies in developing and commercializing technology related to ureteral stents.

These stents play a vital role in medical procedures, aiding in fluid drainage from the kidney to the bladder when the ureter is obstructed due to various clinical conditions.

However, traditional stents, being non-degradable, present several challenges, including discomfort, urinary tract infections, and the need for surgical removal.

The groundbreaking research conducted by a team of experts from IIT Roorkee and UnivLabs Technologies has resulted in the creation of a biodegradable polymeric composite with enzymatic degradation for ureteral stents.

This patented technology offers a promising alternative to conventional stents by addressing critical issues such as biofilm formation, encrustation, and the need for surgical removal.

Prof Akshay Dvivedi, dean, Sponsor Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), IIT Roorkee, expressed optimism regarding the potential impact of this collaboration on healthcare practices, particularly in the field of urology.

In his opinion, this innovation has the potential to improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and enhance the overall quality of life for patients requiring such medical interventions.

Regarding the broader implications of research collaborations, Prof K.K. Pant, director of IIT Roorkee, said, "The research is a catalyst for positive change, driving progress and shaping the trajectory of human civilization. Its impact extends beyond academia, touching every aspect of society and paving the way for a brighter tomorrow."

About UnivLabs Technologies

Founded in 2015, by Sunil Singh, UnivLabs Technologies, known for its research-based approach to medical device manufacturing, is poised to leverage this collaboration to enhance its product portfolio further.

With a focus on surgical vision, urology consumer products, and wearable infusion pumps, the company aims to continue its trailblazing efforts in medical technology.

In addition to developing biodegradable ureteral stents, UnivLabs Technologies has also made significant strides in other areas of medical innovation. The company has launched flagship products such as the 4K endoscope tower and is in the advanced stages of developing a flexible endoscope.

In a related healthcare initiative, in 2022, researchers at IIT Roorkee and AIIMS Delhi collaborated to develop the mobile application 'SwasthGarbh,' to provide antenatal care and real-time medical support to pregnant women.

This application, endorsed by clinicians, serves as a vital tool for women, particularly those in rural areas or with limited access to healthcare services.
