The newly developed device incorporates advanced features such as precise tinnitus matching, customizable multimodal management strategies, and tools for tracking disease progression, all at an affordable cost.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have developed a portable and affordable device to diagnose and manage tinnitus, a condition characterized by the perception of sound without any external stimulus.

Tinnitus, often described as ringing in the ears, affects over 740 million adults globally, and research published in JAMA Neurology 2022 shows that more than 120 million people face significant difficulties due to the condition.

In a statement, IIT Bombay highlighted the challenges faced by tinnitus patients, including severe sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety, and a negative impact on mental and social well-being. The condition is recognized for its demoralizing effect on the overall quality of life.

The newly developed device incorporates advanced features such as precise tinnitus matching, customizable multimodal management strategies, and tools for tracking disease progression, all at an affordable cost. It aims to assist clinicians in delivering accurate diagnoses and providing personalized management experiences to patients.

Comprehensive Solution Backed by Research

The project, which received funding from the Tata Centre for Technology and Design (TCTD) and the Wadhwani Research Centre for Bioengineering (WRCB), reflects a focused approach to addressing the gaps in tinnitus management tools currently available.

“The device is designed to empower clinicians with precise diagnostic tools while ensuring that each patient receives a unique and effective management experience,” said the researchers. The supporting application software integrates seamlessly with the device, enabling clinicians to monitor progress and tailor treatment protocols as needed.

Tinnitus remains a significant public health concern due to its widespread prevalence and the limitations of existing management techniques. The initiative by IIT Bombay aligns with the growing need for affordable and accessible healthcare solutions that address conditions impacting mental and physical well-being.
