In a significant collaboration, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, have joined forces to introduce an AI-assisted hybrid digital healthcare system aimed at revolutionizing emergency care services.
This innovative partnership seeks to extend the reach of quality healthcare to remote areas and resource-limited settings, potentially transforming the landscape of medical assistance in India.
The AI-assisted digital healthcare system was launched at the recent event marked by the presence of the directors of both institutions. The event also featured a live demonstration from the cardiology Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at AIIMS Raipur.
Commenting on the collaborative efforts, Prof Rajiv Prakash, director, IIT Bhilai, highlighted the technical prowess contributed by IIT Bhilai's team. The project was helmed by a team of engineers under the guidance of prof Santosh Biswas.
On the other hand, Dr DK Tripathi and the AIIMS Raipur team oversaw the adaptation of the solution to meet the medical requirements of AIIMS.
At the core of this AI-assisted healthcare system lies a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), seamlessly integrated with AI algorithms.
During the demonstration, the system showcased its ability to accurately diagnose conditions such as ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), commonly known as a heart attack, in real-time.
This achievement underscores the potential of technology to enhance clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes, particularly in critical care scenarios.
The initiative, known as Ayush-Tech, was established in June 2023 with the aim of synergizing the technical expertise of IIT Bhilai with the medical insights of AIIMS Raipur.
By fostering collaborative research, development, and training opportunities, Ayush-Tech endeavors to harness cutting-edge engineering technologies to address pressing healthcare challenges.
The AI-assisted healthcare system will improve emergency care, focusing on AI integration, joint research, and the first successful implementation, marking a significant milestone in technology integrated medicine.
This interdisciplinary approach holds promise for driving innovation and advancing medical facilities across the country.
Last year, IIT Bhubaneswar announced its collaboration with AIIMS Bhubaneswar on artificial intelligence (AI) to promote academic and research collaboration in various areas of health and technology.
The partnership aimed to integrate medical science with technology for providing a better and more equipped healthcare service.
The two national institutes signed a memorandum of understanding to extend collaboration in advancing research for public health applications like early diagnosis of disease and outbreaks, AI and data analytics, biomedical engineering and technology, disease prediction modeling, digital health, development of tools, equipment and strategies for diagnostic and therapeutic use.
Similarly, NIMHANS and IIIT Bangalore have recently extended their collaboration to enable the national-level launch of the Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking with States (Tele MANAS) programme.
While NIMHANS is designing the programm, IIIT Bangalore is taking care of its architecture and design.
