In a move to combat malaria, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has planned to collaborate with Indian companies for the technology transfer for malaria detection.

For collaboration, the ICMR has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from eligible manufacturing companies. After selection, the companies will enter into a defined agreement for licencing or commercialisation of the technology.

Under this collaboration, ICMR is set to grant companies the rights to further develop, manufacture, sell, and commercialise the diagnostic technology. Further, ICMR-NIMR institute's technical oversight, coupled with the companies’ manufacturing capabilities, will speed up the process to ensure a smooth transition from development to widespread commercial use.

The initiative revolves around the "Novel molecular diagnostic technique for malaria parasite species identification," developed by the ICMR-National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR) Institute.

The "Novel molecular diagnostic technique for malaria parasite species identification" offers high sensitivity and specificity in identifying various malaria parasite species. The technology is poised to revolutionise malaria diagnostics by providing a more accurate and efficient means of detection.

ICMR-NIMR Institute, being the developer of the technology, holds expertise in various techniques, methods, and information pertinent to the diagnostic assay's production. The institute is committed to providing expert guidance and technical support throughout all phases of the diagnostic assay's production. This support includes study planning, product development, study protocol development, results/data analysis, safety and efficacy assessment, product improvement, and more.

This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to combat malaria. It is aimed at offering a far-sighted avenue for more accurate and accessible diagnostic tools in the global fight against malaria.

Established in 1911, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world. It aims to improve the health and quality of life of the citizens. Its mission includes harnessing and encouraging the use of modern biology tools in addressing health concerns of the country.

Last month, the ICMR invited applications for clinical training and translational research workshops. Clinical Training workshops aim to offer practical training in specific clinical procedures, targeting medical students, young clinicians, and scientists specialising in relevant biomedical research fields.

On the other hand, Translational Research workshops focus on the translation of research findings into practical applications for diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and interventions. These findings, having proven their efficiency and efficacy in labs, are ready to be transformed into products that benefit society.
