In a significant development, a surgery was successfully performed on a one-year-old infant using SSI Mantra, India's first indigenous surgical robotic system.

Dr Chandra Mohan Vaddi, senior urologist & MD of Preeti Urology & Kidney Hospitals, Hyderabad, performed a pyeloplasty on the infant, SS Innovations, the developer of SSI Mantra said in a release.

The surgery was necessitated by a condition diagnosed during the mother's pregnancy. A Pyeloplasty surgery was recommended after the severity of the blockage in the left kidney was confirmed by a nuclear scan. Options for the surgery included open surgery, laparoscopic, or robotic-assisted approaches.

Dr Vaddi opted for the robotic assisted surgery on the one-year-old patient from Bidar using the SSI Mantra system to treat the left kidney swelling caused by a block at the Uretero-Pelvic junction.

This surgery marks a significant advancement in pediatric robotic surgery and a testament to the capabilities of the SSI Mantra system, the surgical robot maker said in a press release.

The SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System, developed by SS Innovations, is the first Made in India modular multi-arm system with latest features.

Dr Vaddi commenting on the milestone surgery highlighted the potential of indigenous Indian innovation to revolutionize surgical care, making it safe, precise, and affordable.

“After all considerations and with parental consent, we performed the Robotic Pyeloplasty with the Made in India Surgical Robotic System – The SSI Mantra, as this system provided the crystal-clear 3D 4K vision with a greater magnified view, increased precision with wristed instruments, better access to the target area, and ergonomic comfort to the surgeon.”

Dr Sudhir Prem Srivastava, founder, chairman & CEO of SS Innovations, expressed confidence in the SSI Mantra's ability to democratize advanced surgical care in India and beyond.

“We firmly believe that our indigenous surgical robotic system will become widely embraced, paving the way for a future, where safe and affordable robotic surgeries will coexist with the need and will cater to all walks of life across India,” Dr Srivastava said.

Global Adoption of India’s Indigenous Surgical System

With regulatory approvals in multiple countries and over 1000 successful surgeries performed to date, the SSI Mantra surgical system is poised for further expansion.

The system offers flexibility in surgical operations and has been clinically validated across over 50 different procedures, including cardiac surgery.

It has already been deployed in India, Indonesia, and Guatemala after receiving regulatory approvals and has seen 32 installations globally.

SS Innovations plans to increase its global footprint and is seeking approvals from the United States and Europe regulators in 2024 – 2025.

The system's user-friendly interface and state-of-the-art features shorten the learning curve and position it as a viable option for surgeons worldwide, the company noted.
