Humana has entered a multiyear partnership with Google Cloud to modernize its cloud infrastructure and develop generative AI solutions.

The deal is expected to streamline operations and improve the healthcare experience for Humana members. However, the financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The collaboration will build on an existing relationship focused on improving population health and utilizing AI technologies to benefit Humana members and patients.

Reportedly, both companies are exploring new opportunities to create solutions tailored to healthcare needs.

Highlighting the benefits of this partnership, Jim Rechtin, CEO of Humana, said, “We plan to leverage Google Cloud’s capabilities to simplify access to the right care at the right time for our members and patients.”

He emphasized that integrating cloud and AI technologies could lead to more responsive contact centers, easier navigation of provider networks, and improved understanding of healthcare coverage.

The technologies are also expected to enhance primary care by tailoring services to individual needs.

Echoing similar sentiments, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, noted that merging Humana’s extensive knowledge of healthcare with Google Cloud’s advanced AI and cloud technologies has the potential to enhance operational efficiency, provide clinical insights, and offer personalized care.

According to him, this partnership is designed to improve member well-being and transform healthcare delivery.

Focus on Gen AI & Healthcare Applications

Generative AI remains a focal point in the tech industry, with companies looking to harness its potential to boost efficiency and enhance user experiences.

Google Cloud has been developing generative AI capabilities and large language models (LLMs) specifically for the healthcare sector.

In 2022, the company introduced Med-PaLM, an LLM designed to address medical queries. Additionally, Google Cloud launched MedLM, a set of foundational models aimed at healthcare applications, in December.

In March, Google Health announced advancements in its Gemini model, focusing on medical applications. The company is refining its AI models to assist with early disease detection, enhance personal health features in apps like Fitbit, and support medical reasoning and clinical discussions.

Google Cloud emphasized that its customers retain control over their data. In healthcare settings, data access and usage are secured through Google Cloud’s infrastructure, which complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The platform supports stringent privacy and security measures to protect patient information.
