The Health Ministry has announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance public health services across India, designating AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and AIIMS Rishikesh as 'Centres of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence.'
These institutions have been tasked with developing and deploying AI-driven health solutions to strengthen disease surveillance, diagnosis, and patient care.
Recently, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted AI innovations such as the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) on the e-Sanjeevani telemedicine platform, Media Disease Surveillance (MDS) in the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and diagnostic tools for diabetic retinopathy and abnormal chest X-rays.
Media Disease Surveillance has been instrumental in monitoring infectious diseases since April 2022, generating over 4,500 event alerts that have aided timely response and reduced disease-related mortality and morbidity, Jadhav said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
CDSS, integrated into e-Sanjeevani, has streamlined patient data and assisted doctors with AI-based differential diagnoses in over 12 million consultations, out of the 196 million conducted on the platform.
Under the TB elimination programme, the 'Cough Against TB' AI solution has increased TB detection rates by 12-16% in community screenings. Additionally, the 'Prediction of Adverse TB Outcomes AI Solution' has reduced adverse outcomes by 27% among patients under treatment.
