Aligning with India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, Paul underscored the need to increase exports and position India as a global leader in the diagnostics market.

The Indian government is considering revising regulatory norms for the MedTech and pharmaceutical sectors, according to VK Paul, Member (Health) of Niti Aayog.

Speaking at an event, Paul emphasized the need for regulatory frameworks to evolve with advancing technologies.

"With changing times, the regulatory framework needs adjustments," Paul stated.

He highlighted that regulatory improvements for medical technology and pharmaceuticals are currently being actively considered under the guidance of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Paul further invited industry stakeholders to contribute ideas for improving the system, stressing the government's openness to suggestions.

"We are working on this with an open mind and recognize that improvements are needed, especially in areas like cell and gene therapies and integrated healthcare systems," he added.

Boosting Exports in MedTech

Aligning with India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, Paul underscored the need to increase exports and position India as a global leader in the diagnostics market.

"India should not only be the largest market for diagnostics but also a significant creator of technologies in the sector," he said.

He also mentioned the Medtech Mitra initiative, launched by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which aims to promote innovation and product development in the diagnostics field.

The government's regulatory reforms are expected to enhance India's role in the global MedTech and pharmaceutical industries.

In another development in the MedTech sector, in August, the Karnataka government announced that it is partnering to enhance its public healthcare system by implementing MedTech across its 31 districts.

This initiative focuses on improving healthcare delivery, operations, and access through telemedicine, EHR, and health management systems, particularly in remote areas. It also aims to integrate advanced diagnostic tools, upgrade infrastructure, and train healthcare professionals.

The government is seeking corporate social responsibility (CSR) and philanthropic partnerships, alongside C-CAMP, to implement innovative health technologies over the next 3-5 years, with a focus on affordability, accessibility, and quality.
