The system is designed to balance pre-booked appointments with walk-ins, particularly benefiting underprivileged patients who face challenges with online booking.
The Health Minister of Goa, Vishwajit Rane, has announced that the super-specialty block (SSB) at Goa Medical College (GMC) in Bambolim will implement a Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) starting January 2025.
This advanced system aims to revolutionize hospital operations, improve efficiency, and enhance patient care.
Minister Rane described the initiative as transformative, emphasizing its potential to streamline hospital workflows, provide seamless access to patient records, and enhance the overall patient experience.
The HIMS will simplify processes like patient registration, diagnostics, and follow-up care.
The system will manage electronic medical records (EMRs), enabling the collection, preservation, and administration of patient data. It will also support hospital operations management and healthcare policy-making.
GMC Dean, Dr SM Bandekar, explained that the digital platform would allow real-time access to patient information and locations.
The system is designed to balance pre-booked appointments with walk-ins, particularly benefiting underprivileged patients who face challenges with online booking.
Additionally, follow-up treatments will not require prior online appointments, ensuring greater accessibility.
In May 2024, Minister Rane revealed plans to introduce AI-powered lung cancer screening tools across all district hospitals and primary health centers (PHCs) in the state.
These tools aim to enhance healthcare accessibility and facilitate early cancer detection.
Goa currently has two district hospitals in Mapusa (North Goa) and Margao (South Goa), along with state-run PHCs that already offer free breast cancer screening.
These initiatives underline the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve public health outcomes and ensure timely medical interventions.
The combined efforts to digitize GMC and enhance cancer care reflect Goa’s progressive approach to strengthening its healthcare infrastructure.
