The initiative, unveiled at GTC 2025, aims to address the growing burden on healthcare professionals due to rising patient volumes and workforce shortages.

GE HealthCare has announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to develop AI-powered autonomous X-ray and ultrasound systems.

The initiative aims to address the growing burden on healthcare professionals due to rising patient volumes and workforce shortages.

It will leverage NVIDIA’s AI computing platforms to streamline imaging workflows and enhance diagnostic precision.

AI in Imaging to Address Workforce Challenges

With over 4.2 billion imaging procedures conducted annually, radiologists and sonographers face increasing pressure, compounded by workforce shortages. According to industry estimates, 81% of US health systems report a lack of radiology technologists, while 90% of sonographers experience work-related musculoskeletal disorders due to repetitive tasks.

"GE HealthCare has a deep history of firsts in medical imaging, and we continue to build upon our legacy of innovation as a healthcare solutions provider. We are excited about our expanded relationship with NVIDIA and the potential of autonomous X-ray and ultrasound as we are focused on unlocking smarter, more automated solutions that enhance efficiency, standardize imaging, and help ease the burden of increased volumes and double-digit staff shortages on healthcare professionals," said Roland Rott, President and CEO of Imaging at GE HealthCare.

The partnership will explore NVIDIA’s Isaac for Healthcare platform, using AI to automate tasks such as patient positioning and scan optimization, reducing reliance on overburdened staff.

Additionally, machine-to-patient interactions will be developed to guide patients through scans autonomously.

Potential Impact on Ultrasound Workflow

Ultrasound imaging, a widely used diagnostic tool, has seen an increase in complexity and demand, further straining healthcare workers.

The collaboration seeks to create AI-driven ultrasound solutions capable of assisting with image interpretation and robotic navigation, thereby minimizing physical strain on sonographers.

"Artificial intelligence and physical AI offer an incredible opportunity to expand global access to GE HealthCare’s advanced imaging systems. Working together to train and test autonomous solutions, we will accelerate the future of medical imaging capabilities, starting with the two most widely used modalities: X-ray and ultrasound," said Kimberly Powell, Vice President of Healthcare at NVIDIA.

GE HealthCare and NVIDIA plan to test and train these autonomous systems in virtual environments before real-world deployment, ensuring safety and accuracy in clinical settings.
