This advanced procedure employs small incisions, specialized instruments, and advanced imaging technologies to address foot and ankle conditions with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
FootSecure, a Bengaluru-based startup specializing in podiatric medicine and wound care, has become the third facility in India to offer minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery (MIFAS).
This advanced procedure employs small incisions, specialized instruments, and advanced imaging technologies to address foot and ankle conditions with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
FootSecure, founded in 2018 by Dr Sanjay Sharma, has expanded its services to include MIFAS after Dr Sharma’s training with GRECMIP in Barcelona. GRECMIP, an international society dedicated to minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, is known for its research and educational contributions.
Dr Sharma emphasized the advantages of MIFAS, stating, “Minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery offers significant advantages over traditional methods. It is particularly beneficial for patients with diabetes, who typically experience slower wound recovery.
According to him, patients undergoing MIFAS often recover more quickly and may leave the operation theater independently.
“Just as laparoscopic surgery has become standard in abdominal procedures, it is time for advanced podiatric procedures such as MIFAS to become more accessible. We aim to make these procedures mainstream through our efforts,’’ Sharma added.
MIFAS addresses a range of conditions, including bunions (hallux valgus), hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, Achilles tendonitis, flatfoot deformities, forefoot pain, heel pain, soft tissue masses, and tendon and ligament repairs. It is particularly useful for treating diabetic foot conditions, including deformities and ulcers.
The procedure offers several advantages including reduced scarring for smaller incisions resulting in minimal scarring, faster recovery for patients experience quicker recovery with less postoperative pain along with lower risk of complications which means the technique involves less blood loss and a reduced risk of infection. Dr Sharma also noted FootSecure’s comprehensive approach to foot and ankle health, which includes diagnosis, therapy, surgery, and rehabilitation. The clinic addresses over 300 conditions, including chronic wounds and sports injuries, as well as diabetic foot complications.
