Delhi Police has introduced QR-enabled smart identity cards for senior citizens to enhance their safety and emergency preparedness.
The initiative was unveiled during a special interaction program, Samvad, where Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena distributed durable and user-friendly cards to 400 senior citizens from across the city.
The smart ID cards feature QR codes containing essential personal details, medical histories, and emergency contact information.
Speaking at the event, Saxena emphasized the cards’ ability to ensure timely assistance during emergencies.
"The QR code aims to provide critical information to responders and healthcare providers, improving the efficiency of emergency interventions," he said.
Special Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma highlighted the advantages of digital integration.
“By scanning the QR code, responders can instantly access a senior citizen’s medical details, reducing delays in providing necessary aid and potentially saving lives,” she said.
Sharma also stressed that the cards minimize the visible sharing of sensitive information, ensuring data privacy while enabling quick access for authorized personnel.
During interactions with senior citizens, Saxena acknowledged concerns about the lack of affordable healthcare services and the absence of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi.
He pledged to address these issues, which many seniors said left them without access to essential benefits.
Two senior citizens were honored for their exceptional contributions. Roshan Lal Gupta, a 90-year-old retired defense auditor, was celebrated for his fitness achievements, including mountain climbing at 71.
Colonel YL Sood, a Vishisht Seva Medal recipient and veteran of the 1965 and 1971 wars, was recognized for his military service and impactful post-retirement social initiatives.
The event included safety awareness sessions tailored for senior citizens, such as a cybersecurity briefing by ACP Manoj from the IFSO unit.
Educational materials on Alzheimer’s disease and general safety guidelines were also distributed.
Additionally, Delhi Police highlighted the Kutumb app, launched to enhance senior citizen safety, with 65,000 users already registered.
Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora emphasized maintaining close contact with beat constables and sharing their emergency contact details with attendees.
Special CPs Vivek Gogia and Garima Bhatnagar joined other senior officers and representatives from various police districts in supporting the event.
The program, coordinated by the Senior Citizen Cell of the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC), also saw participation from 150 police personnel across Delhi.
This initiative reflects Delhi Police’s commitment to ensuring senior citizens feel secure and supported while leveraging technology to create a safer environment for the elderly.
