Cigna plans to contribute $9 million over the next three years to tackle disparities and inequities in priority states.

Cigna, the Bloomfield-based health insurer, has launched a new impact fund addressing health disparities in local communities.

The insurer's philanthropic arm, the Cigna Group Foundation, will operate the Cigna Group Health Equity Impact Fund. Cigna plans to contribute $9 million over the next three years to tackle disparities and inequities in priority states.

The program will initially focus on Houston, Texas, and Hartford, Connecticut. By targeting these specific communities, Cigna aims to "optimize" the level of assistance needed to address unique equity challenges.

Health Challenges in Houston

In Houston, high rates of diabetes and obesity disproportionately impact Black and Hispanic residents.

Data shows that 40% of Black and Hispanic people in Houston are obese, and 25% of all adults in the region do not get enough exercise.

"We are committed to advancing health equity in Houston, as it has some of the starkest health disparities nationwide, especially among people of color. We'll start by addressing those key social determinants of health – things like food, transportation, and access to equitable care – to ensure that those underserved throughout Houston have the things they need to thrive," said Melissa Skottegaard, board chair of The Cigna Group Foundation, in a press statement.

The impact fund intends to improve access to transportation for health visits and other health-related activities. It will also invest in innovative ways to distribute fresh food and provide nutrition education.

Addressing Health Disparities in Hartford

Hartford, Connecticut, faces some of the widest gaps in racial and ethnic health disparities in the nation. According to Connecticut Health Foundation data, Black and Hispanic residents are more likely to experience severe complications related to asthma and diabetes.

The impact fund has established several key goals for Hartford, including expanding access to providers and community resources that offer culturally competent care. For example, in Houston, the fund will also invest in transportation solutions.

"We know that 80% of a person’s health is affected by things outside of the doctor’s office, and we are dedicated to ensuring those who are underserved right here in Hartford have access to the things they need to be healthy," Skottegaard said.

Initiatives & Partnerships

The Cigna Group Foundation’s initiatives focus on addressing the social determinants of health – factors such as food, transportation, and access to healthcare. By partnering with local organizations, the foundation aims to create sustainable improvements in health equity.

By focusing on transportation access to fresh food and culturally competent care, Cigna hopes to reduce the health inequities in Houston and Hartford.
